Boot catch striker plate bracket

OK there must be an easy way!
I am trying to fit the boot catch striker plate bracket to the new section of rear boot floor. I have a new bottom boot surround panel spot welded to the new section of boot floor, boot lid fits quite well, so its time to fit the bracket that holds the boot striker catch.
So Ive got the boot closed my head is poking up through the hole where the petrol tank sits and I'm trying to get the new bracket to fit onto the boot catch.
The new bracket seems about 1/2 inch too high so I check against the old panel Ive cut out and yes that seems correct. I cut out the spot welds holding the angled section of the bracket which holds the captive plate and reduce the bottom of this "wedge" by about 1/2 inch.
Then try to mate up the modified plate to the catch on the boot lid and the angle of the catch is different to the angle of the bracket so the peg wont locate into the hole on the striker plate.
I butcher the back of the wedge by sawing and filing to try to change the angle to the extent I now have a lot of virtually scrap bits.
Am I doing something completely wrong or is this another example of bits that dont fit and should I just salvage the drilled captive plate and make up my own bracket!!!!!

probably poor parts fitting! but I've never had this experience maybe you should try getting more accurate measurments of the old panel and compare everything with the new?

Pictures, my man - pictures? It would be good help to see your predicament...I think I may have ordered the same part (from the same folks), and I am heading straight into your waters next week when I have to replace the same area (and more).. a pic, please?
