the third terminal on the later type flasher unit.
Mine has a third terminal anyway... But I don't think it's currently connected to anything!
It came straight from a '62 two door Moggy. I don't know if it was original in that car, true, but it seems to be... Did any other cars use this same unit, with a different wiring?

then with a test lamp find the left and right outputs
I now have the main indicators- the physical lights outside the car- working, and the right way round, all that doesn't work is the little one (for obvious reasons)...

**Correction I have two terminals, not three.**

Pretty sure that's what the extra wire and the black (earth) are for. Otherwise - no need for an earth wire ! If you ignore the extra wire - do the indicators work - just no warning lamp ?

Exactly what happens! I can never put things so succinctly
The earth, incidentally, goes nowhere at either end. The end nearest the unit ends in a little connector for under a screw head, but it doesn't go anywhere (I just put it under one of the bracket screws on the unit). The other end, under the dash, is just a loose bullet.

So - that extra wire IS for the warning lamp - it needs a 3 terminal flasher unit. Otherwise - arrange for the lamp to be connected as per your old switch with the lamp connected between the two circuits - and NO earth!

I'm going to dismantle the unit and split the wire. Will that work? It's one wire right out of the end of the stalk- is there any way to remove the bulb holding end of the stalk?

Nope, just the plastic lens, which unscrews. At least, 'nope' with the OE ones - think it's true of copies though

But the extra wire and the black wire should be connected to the warning lamp - try it with a small torch (flashlight!) battery to see if it lights up.

Don't worry, I understand torch... And I spell it colour, and say tomahto... I'm just living with savages! :D
But they're always very nice to me!
TBH (See, I'm learning with the acronyms, bigginger!), I can't see where the black wire would attach to the warning lamp. But I'm going to have another go at it soon.
Just out of interest- I started this whole thing because the little moulding on the end of the stalk that holds the lens has warped, snapped and cracked until the lens no longer fits. Is there a solution to this, apart from replacing the unit?
I'm getting some casting materials soon, so when I do I could actually cast a new end bit that was at least superficially similar, spray it black...

I've never yet succeeded in removing that it in one piece, and judging by the number that I see held together with tape, I don't think I'm alone in that :(

It won't come off in one piece, I don't think, you're right... For the moulding I can reconstruct it with superglue once it's off though, I don't need it to last- or even mock one up from wood! Up til then I'm going to travel warning-light-less, since I prefer my old indicators in every other way... Not worth changing the wiring to a third terminal.
