Rubbery goo under gas tank & gearbox cover [SORTED]

Post by Bluesman »

Guys - when putting the tank back into the car, what stuff do you use for that gooey seal under the tank lip? Is it just a vibration and sound dampener, or does it have more tasks?

And under the gearbox cover...is it the same stuff?

Hopefully, your suggestions/brands/trade marks can be found over here too :-)

Cheers /Richard

The proper stuff is called Dum Dum. It's also a sealant, and it has the advantage that it doesn't completely set inside the joint so it allows some movement.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

There´s brands like Terostat and Plastic Padding over here that carry the correct/corresponding stuff, I just found out. Thanks anyway!

Dum Dum is used on older Land Rovers for sealing the static part of the door windows.
Most Land Rover specialists / dealers will stock it if you find t difficult to source.

And yes 'dumb' here in UK (the 'b' is silent) means 'not able to speak' - but is also often taken (unfortunately) to mean 'stupid'. Just be sure you get a non-setting very thick goo.
