Steering Wheel Removal

I have prised (sp?) off the horn button and another thingy and I'm looking at a large nut.
What size is that monster?
Do I need a special puller after I get the nut off or will it come with some gentle mallet blows?

Undo the nut (can't remember socket size - but largest socket in my set) but DO NOT remove it. Then simply bang the wheel from below with your fists/and or jerk it from above - or you may need to use wood and hammer. It will come loose suddenly - and if the nut is right off it can jump up and smack you in the face!

I think I got mine off with a 35mm socket. However, take bmc's advice. I was that soldier. Bust my lip from smack in the mouth from steering wheel.

If you have not got the right size socket, then a blunt chisel and hammer.
I know it is cannibalism, but some times needs must.

Pardon my ignorance, what's Whit?
It's gotta be bigger than 3/4, my biggest socket is 1 1/8 and it wasn't big enough...

Whit = whitworth, which is a crazy size unit used on early bolt threads in UK. I guess you will need to go the chisel route - which i will admit to doing in the past - it works!

You can get metric and (I imagine) AF sockets that will do it though. I'd tell you sizes, but it's 22.30, and I can't be bothered going out to the garage to get them and check. Maybe tomorrow - I know they're on this forum already, 'cos I (for one) have posted them before, but the 'search' facility isn't up to much

If there's not a dent on one side of the hex, make one and then use pliars to twist... I don't know if I've been just lucky, but I've removed multiple nuts, all but one had that dent and a large pair of pliars did the job in every circumstance. Maybe mine were all a little loose...

Dont know the size but it's a huge one - I had to go borrow one from a vintage enthusiast who's into old tractors. Loaned me the biggest socket set and wrench ive ever seen - it nearly collapsed the rear suspension on the trav !
Must get one of my own though as the wheel will have to come off again just to re-seat the new indicator stalk.

The nearest AF size is 1, 5/16 which is very close and works

Yes - I think that's the biggest in my set. It also undoes Mini drive shafts - and crankshaft/flywheel bolts!

Oh dear - I did say Mini drive shaft - and crankshaft/flywheel bolt. So I was still thinking Mini. It's the only 3 uses I have found for that socket.

i just brought a 3/4 deep whit impact socket , on the other side was a metric measurement as well at 33mm and fits perfect oh and this is also the same size as the starer dog nut. cheers dusty.

If you do have to resort to the drastic method try a large centre punch first rather than the chisel, but if you have a nearby mini specialist they will have one.
