Having done this job myself I would recommend you remove the diff so when you order the shafts order a diff gasket too and the gaskets that seal the halfshaft ends to the hub (4 of them; two paper and 2 rubber rings)

yep ordered the 'consumables'

2x paper gasket, O rings and oil seals
1x diff gasket
few nuts for the diff (to account for any that get rounded off in the process, prop bolts should be good as changed those last year when I did the gearbox)

looking at best place to get the shafts (will buy a pair leaving me with 1 spare) also sorting out a used diff just in case....

was going to do the rear brake shoes and replace the drums, have all those bits already so I'll do all that at the same time.

at this rate over the years she will end up a new car bit by bit!

Remember that half shafts become handed with use so mark your spare so you know which side it came from.

Rob_Jennings wrote:hummm thanks for offer matt/dan but really need the toughened ones as she is a 1275 so puts more stress through the back

question if you break a half shaft do you get any noise? because it failed totally silently, pulling away down hill, and is whisper silent when i put her in gear and let the prop turn (only just long enough to see the problem dont want to churn up the muck) I'm hoping that it is the sharfts and not something in the diff (assuming thats not likely to fail) is there anyway to guess at this before i start? otherwise might be wanting a 'spare' 422 diff on hand as once i start the job I have to finish it

oh well these things happen, will gather what bits i can and prepare a day, hope someone can give me a hand (even just to roll her out the garage)

oh and much to colin and my surprise Darren has quite a tidy lowlight with side valve engine! and here was me just thinking it would be just another 2 door mog. hope our advice gives him a good start and he can get it firing up soon.
Thanks to you & Colin for popping over on Sunday. I have paid my 24GBP for MMOC and hit the ESM website. Hoping to get the moggy purring this week before Hong Kong beckons.

good man, swap the coil, lead and dizzy cap, clean and set the points and you should be good. but that battery will need a boost was turning over but probably not fast enough to fire

good luck

thanks matt I've sourced a diff. hopefully its only the shafts but I'd rather be prepared I'm planning to drive to bath at the weekend and pick up a pair of shafts actually cheaper to drive it than the postage and none of that missed delivery rubbish!

On the off chance that it's Charles Ware's your driving to, they aren't in Bath any more, they're now in Bristol

Change in direction..... heading to ESM instead as going to collect a diff from that part of the world too.

Mr Wares ~80 miles just over 2 hours
ESM ~120 miles just over 2 hours (real roads!)

do any of the sadmogs or any Southampton locals need anything bulky from ESM? (I'll be in the Astra so some room to spare)

Not bulky but if you could pick up a current price list that would be handy.

Cheers
