The simple facts are though - it costs about £60 (second hand parts) to fit larger drum brakes - and about 1 hour installation (I changed mine yesterday to a 'new' set and did it within the hour) while discs cost very much more and are not a simple swap. Owners also often like to have a servo with discs - more cost and even more hassle to fit because of the need to repipe the rear brakes through the servo, and some say a remote reservoir is wise with discs - oh dear, more cost and more installation!

dunketh, does your guide cover the 1300 marina engine? and could I have a copy please? I'm starting to think of this mod with a taller diff

My guide only covers the MG Midget engine.
To be embarrassingly honest with you I've never set eyes on a Marina/Ital engine so I honestly wouldn't know where to start.

I believe they have a different backplate to the Minor engines so you'd need to swap the backplates over as well as all the 'usual' stuff mentioned in the guide. There may be other issues too.. Oil Filter maybe?

A search around the forum would be your best way forward. :wink:

The backplate from a 1098 engine can be used - and of course a 1098/948 front plate is needed. The 1098 flywheel (you can't easily use the marina flywheel) needs to be drilled on the flange to match the 1275 Marina crank - which has 6 bolts and one (or maybe two) dowels. Fortunately the marina flywheel can be used as a drill jig - it bolts nicely to the Minor flywheel and then you drill through the Marina into the 1098. Otherwise just the same problems - heater tap/timng case breather and radiator top hose.

Are you sure ?
I've overlaid an Ital backplate over a Minor item and the oil pump cover is in different place.
I tried the 1098 (with oil pump cover) backplate on the 1275 block and the cover fouls.
Only slightly but noticable all the same.

Aye - a slight 'mod' may be required on some engines - I think it depends which type of oilpump is fitted to the 1275.

Greetings,
I am wondering if you still have the file on the 1275 swap? I know this post is from what seems like a 1,000 years ago. I work at a shop that all we work on is British cars. I should mention I live in the United States. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you cost it all up. A complete 1275 Midget engine can often be had for £150 - £200 and it is the better option imo. Certainly gives a lot more torque if not a huge increase in outright speed. :lol:

I think the brakes and suspension will be fine provided they're in good condition. I regularly drive mine on motorways and fast A roads and the drums have been fine. They do overheat on very hot summer days but you just back off a little when this happens.

File is on its way. :wink:
