My 1957 Traveller has a lid on both gloveboxes. Having just removed the l/h lid and box to trace a water leak I notice that, in addition to the four fixing clips at the bottom into which the screws enter through the hinges, there are two further clips at the top of the glovebox. Common sense dictates that there should also be screws into these to secure the top. However there are no corresponding holes in the surround through which screws might pass, it's the same on the r/h side.
Should there be holes in the steel surround or have I missed something?
My '62 saloon has the open gloveboxes with chrome trim which are much simpler, the fixing screws (6 self tappers I think) pass through the glovebox material into the steel surround which is drilled accordingly, securing them that way.

I think its normal for the top clips not being screwed. The holes in the surround are there for the hinges on the glovebox lids. But the clips do their job well enough to hold the cardboard liners in place without screws.

Yes there are 4 holes in the steel to accomodate the screws which secure the hinges and the bottom of the glovebox.
The clips are just pushed onto the liner, same as bottom clips, and have holes in them to accept screws. As they are there is no way that the top of the liner is or can be secured other than with screws through the surround and the clips. I'll post a picture.
Has anyone a car same age with similar glovebox arrangement?

The two clips indicated don't do anything and are just pushed onto the lining. There are four similar at the bottom for the lid hinges and to secure the lining to the steel surround. Should the top clips be there or is the top secured by some other means or not at all?

Excuse the sink! :-?

So no one has a 1956-59 Minor 1000 with this type of glovebox? :(

my '55 saloon had these type, but i removed them a while ago and never replaced them.

I seem to remember there being some metal brackets that held the box up at the sides. They bolted to the bottom of the dash

I've got those on Phyllis! IIRC there are the screws which hold the hinges on, and these go through the lining as well. So that's four at the bottom. I've got two on the right hand side of the passenger glovebox because of the chrome stay (yours might not have this as it's a bit earlier - Morris noticed that the lids were quite heavy when they fitted the wooden block inside the casting), so that's six in total. I don't have any at the top, but I think I still have the clips - don't know why because they won't do an awful lot - they're just spire clips...

However, my gloveboxes haven't fallen from their mounts, so it must be ok.

Thanks - unfortunately your pics don't show up on my pc Gareth.
No evidence of a lid stay other than two holes mentioned below. I suspect there could be something missing on the dash. There are two further holes (look to be punched through) and a small piece cut out of the liner at the speedo side. However these holes may be to accomodate a lid stay. The liners do remain in position but I may drill a couple of small holes in the steel surround to enable fitting two screws at the top (they'll be invisible from above anyway).
I haven't had the driver's side box out yet so can't comment on that. But I know it's only secured with the four bottom screws through the hinges.
I've previously asked Newton Commercial and ESM about the fixing of this type of liner and the answers have been a bit vague, more or less stating that they just screw into place.
There must be a car somewhere with the original Cowley assembly line arrangement.

Sorry Gareth- now see the pics.
Just plain painted steel lids on my car. After all it is a "standard model" Traveller. No ashtray or overriders and originally no carpets, heater or screen washers!!

Yours sounds like the same arrangement as mine, only without the chrome arm. As yours is earlier, it's possible that it wasn't fitted at the time - same as the wooden insert. The cut-out would be to accomodate the arm as it fits to the inside flange.

I can't recall a bracket beneath the rear to support the glovebox, but it might have been there - it was a while ago that I refurbished them...

I think yours should just screw in, but someone on here should know for certain!

That hole is so that you can release the screw that holds the speedo in place, there is one either side.

Well, there is the round/oval hole through which the speedo screws can be accessed, but on mine (and subsequently all cars with the chrome arm, I hope...!) there needs to be a rectangle cut out of the inner so that the liner fits around the arm mounting. I don't have a picture of that to hand, I'm afraid... :(

My '57 Minor has no screws at the top of the glove boxes
and,THERE ARE NO HOLES IN THE METAL FLANGE THROUGH
WHICH SCREWS WOULD HAVE PASSED.

Yes Kevin there is a hole for access to speedo securing screw AND a cut out with two holes adjacent on the old liner. The new liner doesn't have this, only the speedo hole.
Even on the new liners there are two holes at the top, as on the old ones, which must be there for something.
Thanks Willie, I'll refrain from drilling any holes, the existing arrangement must be how it's meant to be! Just the four screws at the bottom.

If you're fitting a chrome arm, you'll need to attack the new 18-quids-worth of glovebox liner with a Stanley Knife, I'm afraid. They don't come with the cutout for the arm mounting.

Hopefully sorted out now Gareth. No I'll not be fitting a stay. Leave them as they were.
Now to fit the damn things trying to remember how i manoeuvred the old ones out. Lining up the lid, aperture holes and liner to fit the screws will also be a laugh a minute. :-?

Further - yes, there should be a bracket bolted to the dash (winger300) to which the liner attaches for extra support, missing on my car, hence confusion. There is a hole in the liner which is probably for fixing to the bracket.
The two holes on top are for attaching a chrome trim on deluxe models (I think).

Could be, although the chrome trim (like Phyllis) is fitted to the glovebox lid itself.

Could be for the trim that goes around the glovebox aperture on non-lidded models...

Have a look at http://www.auto-part.com/auction.asp in the Morris catalogue and gloveboxes.
I suspect that the top trim(82) has two holes to secure on liner(61). The bracket is also shown(93).

Nope, the trim screws onto the glovebox lid. The trim for the non-lidded gloveboxes (pre-64) isn't shown.

It should look something like this:

The chrome trim is fixed around the lid, using the screws that are just visible - they screw into the wooden block inside the lid. There is no trim around the raw edge of the liner - that fits inside the dashboard and is not seen.
