Milly Update :)

Post by paulk »

Wotcha folks,

Just thought I'd share with you the newest member of the family.
This is Milly

Image

She is a 1959 standard 2dr.

As the more observant amongst you may have noticed she's not exactly a runner yet. :)

I got her from a fellow board member, and more importantly, mate from Sadmog known to you lot as WPR.

The history goes that her previous owner had her all welded up (some new floor panels and the sills rebuilt) back in '91 to get her back on the road but then gave up. Carlo's dad got her last year but as she was surplus to requirements we took her on last month.

The Plan

As some of you know we've had Maude (1970 2dr) for a couple of years now, but after last years serious MOT fail i've been Umming and Arring about getting a new floor welded in. The problems being that,

A) I couldn't afford to pay someone to put an new floor in.

B) Even after the new floor, Maude still would need new chassis rails Next year and the roof is going around the gutters. All in all we would need to spend around £1000 a year on welding for the next 3-4 years and she'd still be BT Yellow :-?

After a lot of soul searching we decided that Maude would have to be sacrificed BUT as all her mechanicals were fine and dandy she's going to be stripped down for parts.

Enter Milly. Now she is a rolling shell but as the Engine was an unknown quantity and didn't come with a gearbox it was a bit of a No brainer. So Maude will supply the engine and gearbox (probably rear diff too).
This will then make adding Maudes front brakes as an interim brake upgrade essential too.

Ulimatly Milly is going to be my nearly daily runner and our weekend car so i'm considering going 9" drum or, if feeling flush Discs.

She's getting a respray this spring (Me and my Brother-in-law's 1st attempt  )

Other items on the agenda are to try and clean up the exhaust system by fitting a home made RC40 unit with, possibly an adapted midget LCB manifold.
And a water heated inlet manifold with maybe an HIF38 to try and lean out the mid range a bit.

Basically watch this space, Mrs Paulk wants her off the garden by Late June so I'm having to pack the work into quite a tight time schedule.

Heres a few pics from just before we bought her.

Hmmm 1959 dash with added guages

Just as an aside she's getting Joemog's old wings (Peetee) and there are negotiations on going for Freemog's seats (Matt) so she will truly be a product of the almighty Sadmog.
Sadmog are also helping to strip down Maude so there is some nice recycling going on too. :D

Introducing Milly (Update)

Post by paulk »

Just an Update,

Spent today Cleaning up and seam welding where the 1990 resto got away with Stitching. Its nice to be welding two/three edges of decent clean metal for a change.

Image
A posts had been rebuilt but main edge had only been stitched so now seam welded.

Image
Sills were rebuilt but again stitched so I had to seam it up along with a few points on the floor.

Image
Had to do both sides and after grinding flat, cleaning down and then painting both sides looked like this.

Image
As an after thought this is what you get for being a pillock and not wearing a long sleeved top while welding when you know better
Love those gauntlet lines.

I'm still here, just been very busy at work/school dur to us having a new school built so it's kinda like a building site full of kids! The trailer got used well yesterday though, cleared the front of the house of cars so I can try and get the drive done at some point soon.

Update

Milly spent 2 weeks on her side while I seamed up the panels on the bottom.

All ground clean then red leaded, then nice thick coat of Rustoleum Black.

Now back on her wheels, well she would be if I hadn't started taking them all off and sorting out the suspension corner by corner.

I'm now pretty sure she's getting the 9" wolsely drum set I've got as soon as I've finished adapting the backplates for Minor pistons.
Have done one side already and wasn't very hard at all. I filled in one hole and then opened out the slot and drilled a new hole a few Mill further down. Only took 1/2 an hour :)

As the power unit is out of the car(and 30 miles away hiding at work) Also taken the gearbox off and sorted out the carbon bearing and changed over the clutch plate for a better condition one. Gearbox then cleaned up and back together again.

Interior of car is stripped out and is now being painted up (rustoleum black again) so the floor should be nice and shiny in time for the carpet and seats to go back in.

Drivers door is stripped and a couple of small cracks cleaned up and welded. Now it's at my brother in laws where he does all the rubbing down and prep for painting. He's already done all 4 wings and hopefully we will get the 2 pack on over the bank holiday weekend.

Also tidied up and painted most ancillaries ie.

Radiator, heater , engine mounts, starter moter, dynamo.

Not bad in 17 days :)

Its amazing what 1- 1 1/2 hours work at least 5 nights a week does. Really gets things going.

Painted the floor inside again tonight and cleaned up and painted the passsenger front suspension. Tommorrow night is my night off :)
Sadmog night :P

Also bought the 2pack paint today. Hope to get some on the wings this weekend.
