Here comes the snow then !

Post by Orkney »

Been watching this on the long range forecast for the last 10 days - looks like they were correct!
Not looking forward to the 90mph winds forecsat with it though in the early stages :x Got whited out in a field for an hour in teh range rover last time that happened, by the time i could see enough to move it had drifted half way up the car

Spent yesterday rushing around like a man posessed getting all the animal houses cleaned out, quick dash to the farm supplies in the big city to top up with a few sacks of food & some shavings for the clean houses.
Flippin typical that was, normally order a months worth delivered on the 1st of the month to get the full advantage from the account, couldnt risk it though as if thye are right there wont be any delivering going on on friday.

So just have to batten down the hatches today, pick up a few bales of hay for the sheep then a bit of shopping for the next week. Need to look a bit sharp about that too as everywhere sells out of everything preceeding a bad spell of weather.

Might get lucky and be able to do some sledging thats V8 assisted drag sledging

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Hee hee, drag sledging is a real giggle (and nicely dangerous), used to use a truck inner tube behind a quad in the snow, on the rare occasions it made it down to the S.E.

Rumour has it that a nicely formed plywood sled behind a rally car works very well on damp grass... Ho hum

Tactor inner tube is best on a long rope ! A bungee jumping cord would be the ultimate i reckon, build a bit of power into the curves :-)

Medicine aquired
Thats the first thing on the list LOL second some tobacco although strangely some arrived airmail in the post 10 mins ago 8)
Breads already a bit thin on the ground in the shops ! Just debating if or not to go back out in a minute, bag of coal and a Jerry of petrol for the genny.
Was going to do it in the morning but seems the weathers coming a bit faster so just and i quote :-
However, tomorrow, Thursday, the weather is expected to be severe with hurricane force winds forecast. NorthLink will review the latest forecasts on Thursday morning, but based on current information the cancellation of the overnight services between Aberdeen, Kirkwall and Lerwick is probable. The forecast weather and residual sea conditions for Friday are not good and therefore Friday night's services are also under review.

I really don't envy you in Orkney with that severe weather. Central Scotland hasn't been that bad, but, bad enough. Very little snow, but December was colder than I would like, and January hasn't been much better. Was going to Kirkaldy today with a friends sister, to look over a Moggy she is thinking of buying, trip now cancelled due to severe weather warning. Garage is as cold as a witches oops I typed a naughty word in a steel helmet :o

Well its not shaping up to be a great day ! sleety gales at the moment from the west, and oddly cant wait for it to turn northerly.
Thats the side i concentrated the weatherproofing on about the place.
Westerly has fairly taken the heat out of the house overnight.

Well after Crispy Chilli Beef for dinner last night, it was both windy indoors and out :D Another thing I have noticed this year, is the council are using that new road salt with the sugar in it so it sticks to the road better. Horrid stuff, that will have the tin worms working overtime on any exposed metal. Roll on summer, it will take me three weeks to go off white, let alone get a tan. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Dont get me started about road salt :-( the flippin highways in thier wisdom made it so that gritting here is now controlled from Aberdeen - consequently they can be out when not needed, not out when needed etc.
Supposedly done to make a saving when no doubt it costs more that way.

Pretty sure they will be running with the snow ploughs in 24 hours, gives me great amusement - they plough to the end of my track and push a huge drift into the gateway of the farm below me, the poor old duffer there goes up his track (he doesnt farm so doesnt have a tractor) and meets a 6ft + wall of compacted snow

Hmm well the latest is ....
Across Orkney and Caithness strong to gale-force winds will veer W or NW’ly and increase severe gale F9. Meanwhile in Shetland winds will ease, possibly falling light cyclonic briefly before freshening NE’ly. By late evening N’ly winds are expected across the whole area, and these will quickly increase to severe gale F9 or storm F10 and possibly violent storm F11 over exposed hills and headlands. At the same time the showers will turn more readily to snow as temperatures fall, giving some accumulations of lying snow overnight.
Sea state – High with a 4 to 5 metre W’ly swell.

FRIDAY 1st: Severe gale F9 or storm F10 NNW’ly winds bringing frequent and heavy snow showers. With temperatures near or below freezing, drifting of lying snow is likely - giving blizzard-like conditions at times - even at low levels. Disruption to travel should be expected.
Sea state – High or very high with a 5 to 6 metre swell of indeterminate direction.
Its that bloody Ian McGaskils fault I'm convinced

Very fierce wind last night here in west central scotland but been calmish today although building back up nicely now. At Bo'ness steam railway on Monday we found a huge tree down across the track - and that in a v sheltered spot up behind Grangemouth Refinery. Couldn't get any further along to investigate. Probably a few more down now. Anyone needing firewood ?
