Steering rack

Post by Stig »

Is it possible to adjust out play in the steering rack? Mine seems to have developed a bit of play, haven't had a chance to check if it's the rack or the track-rod ends though. Assuming it is the rack, can I take out shims etc.? Never taken one apart before.

It is possible to adjust the rack by changing the shims. Can't remember which book I saw this in! Unless you really know what you are doing stripping a rack it would probably be best to get a recon rack just a swap over and re-tracking.

Obviously check the track rod ends first -this is the most likely wear point and the easiest to fix. Then check the inner joints on the track rods - these are adjustable, but not particularly easy to do on the car although it is do-able. Last wear point in the rack is at the point where the pinion meets the rack - and this is where shims can be taken out. However - it's really not a high wear point especially if the rack has been kept well lubricated. Just do a quick check inside the car at the foot of the steering column - to make sure the clamp bolt holding the column to the rack is nice and tight!
