Wheel balance.

I finally got round to having the wheels re-balanced.

You may remember the previous tyre fitter put the weights on the back of the wheel because it looked nicer without weights showing.

The dynamic balance seemed fine and indeed it was when they checked yesterday. But it appears that putting all the weights on the back caused the problem. The two front ones have now been redone with weights on the front and the back.

First result no more vibration from the front.

Second result he didn't charge me!

The 'dynamic' balance (ie when spinning) is the one which requires the weights to be distributed both inside and outside. It is easy to have perfect static balance (ie not rotating) with all the weights on one side of the wheel - but as you have found, when the wheel is spinning this can set up a wobble as the inside/outside unbalance forces take hold. Anyway - good that it's sorted now!

Hello all,

this is pretty standard way of balancing these days, especially with alloy wheels, so as not to spoil the lines. I don't think many tyre fitters understand balancing principles. Having said that more modern vehicles which have a lot of inset will be less susceptible to lack of weight on the outside rim.
