Turbo converision completed!! small prob

Post by philsheredan »

HELLO THERE EXPERTS
i have recently completed a turbo conversion on my 4 door moggie which is outwardly a little sad, but shes got discs on the front ,a roll bar , polybush set and wider tyres. A late midget gearbox and bottom end with a metro turbo top end. new high pressure fuel pump and regulator, electronic ignition. I really luv it but i have been unable to run it with the turbo connected (plenum chamber removed) because if you rev it up it dies on over run and trying to drive it is impossible as the moment you would be expecting some boost it dies. if i had to guess it feels like the turbo is pushing the fuel back into the carb and with that thought in mind i have tried winding the fuel pressure right up etc and the the only time i got drive it was then BUT the boot lid is now covered in soot and it burnt best part of 20 quid in a day of messing around with it. I used to work in a garage and have been to several of my mates with it but no one has come up with a solutiuon yet. Any body done 1? its only an su carb! simple of simple but it is winding me up as i can hear it (superb!) but not feel it. Phil

Did you use the Metro turbo carb? A normal SU will not work without serious modification. The float chamber should be boost pressure + ~3psi to stop fuel being pushed back into the float chamber under boost. A rising rate fuel pump should be used to do this.

Yes - i'm sure the Turbo Metro has some kind of feedback from the inlet manifold to a fuel pressure regulator that automatically adjusts the fuel pressure in the carb float chamber as the forced pressure in the manifold rises. Probably best to ask on one of the Mini forums. Minifinity is usually v good!

Hello I just realised I have posted on here before when I had this problem.

I.ve sorted it. I think the pressure transfer tube from the plenum chamber to the float chamber was and still is blocked but I discovered a cheat and that is to splice a t piece into the pressure feed from the plenum chamber to the fuel overflow on the float chamber.

I nearly had me a mental breakdown due to this stupid problem as it my only car but now this mog absolutely flies and I mean flies
I made a website www.morrisminor.info and if you click at the top it goes to a video blog of the mog. I.m going to upload some more of it out on the road and I'm going to pimp/restore it

let me know what you think
and if you want to see it before its off the road be quick I'm in waltham abbey

Stupid question....

But have you got the right fuel pump fitted and running correctly.
All mine was ruinning was MG Metro. Also have a baffled fuel tank fitted too.

It was all metro turbo and a new fuel pump and regulator.
Its fixed now. I think the pressure transfer tube from the plenum chamber was and still is blocked despite being stripped and cleaned with an airline, so after some further reading on the mini turbo site they said t piece a tube in the pipe that goes to the pressure reg and connect it to the overflow of the carb therefore directly pressurizing the float chamber with boost pressure and forcing fuel up the jet.
Itworked a treat and I haven't stopped grinning since!! I've had no problems since.

looking forward to the rest of the project now.
least exciting being the welding underneath!
