Steering mods... Thoughts & opinions please.

Post by Spag »

Hello again.

Having had a good grope over the Minor, the main restriction to dimensions of potential engines seems to the the pesky steering rack.

At this stage I am keen not to totally re engineer the front suspension, so was wondering how practical it is to relocate the rack.

It looks like the steering arm could be cut'n'shut or extended upwards a few inches without affecting geometry, allowing the rack to be lifted.

Or indeed rotated 180 / extended downwards, or make some steering arms that bolt onto the kingpin using the brake mounting bolts...

Any of these worth considering - or does someone just happen to have some pics of any other alternatives ?

Cheers !

The rack really needs to be in the same plane (at rest) as the steering arm ends on the swivel pins - otherwise you would have horrendous bump-steer. There are alternate holes for the arms in the original swivels (used on Riley 1.5/W1500) - and using these you may be able to lift the rack - that is what BMC did on these cars!

Hi John

With the new HQ there is a bit too much parking and garage space so there was just this space waiting for something tax exempt and RWD ! :D

Yup - am aware of keeping the relative position of the rack and steering arm ends the same.

The thought was to extending the arms vertically which would then enable raising / lowering the rack the same amount.

The blanked holes look interesting, so will have a proper nose over the weekend to see what else would get in the way !
