The seal for the SII is a solid rubber moulding that fits over the return edge of the boot opening on the body and leaves a blade standing out. On later cars, the seal is a square section that is glued to the inside of the bootlid and closes onto the same return.
When you look at the moulding for the SII, the "blade" that makes the seal is angled. It can be fitted 2 ways, which is correct?
Angled outwards, the rubber will be splayed out away from the boot opening. Angled inwards, the rubber is directed towards the opening when the bootlid closes on it.
I would have thought it should go outwards. Am I wrong?
I too think it should splay outwards as that would present a wall of rubber to any water which go in that far. Having said that, i have just checked my car and it is splayed inwards! It has never leaked so far.
Willie, can you remember if the lid was reluctant to close when you first fitted it? Mine won't shut and i don't know if i need to apply a bit more force or adjust it - somehow - i don't know how??
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
I first fitted the later sponge rubber type of seal and it was impossible to close the boot lid. The early type was less difficult to close but I still had
to slacken off the boot lock at first and then re-adjust as the seal bedded
in.
Lip out would be the obvious choice as the rubber is then stretched on the corners when the lid is shut onto it. Lip in and the rubber on the corners would be compressed.
Its definitely lip out. You trim it snuggly around the catch. I stuck mine on with some windscreen sealer because it tends to lift away from the flange if not, join it at the top with superglue.
