Younger driver named on insurance ?

Post by paulhumphries »

I'm considering adding my son on the Minor insurance when it's back on the road.
It's be 100% my car with me doing 99% of the miles and my son only using occasionally for visits to cinema (he's a film buff) and shopping.
This isn't a con to try and get cheap insurance for a younger driver.
To be honest he's not really interested in driving (we paid for all lessons as part of his 21st birthday present) and it's my idea to try and get him to "keep his hand in" - plus see the fun of older cars.

Anyone recommend a classic / agreed value / limited mileage etc insurer that would add a 23 year old to a policy as a named driver for a reasonable amount ?

Thanks

Paul Humphries.

BTW the car would be 100% standard as I'm now considering putting the 1275 / autobox into the A35 and uprating that with better brakes etc at same time.

HIC are still the best imo.

Not sure what they're like on claims but they offer all the usual extras and are cheaper than anyone else I've tried by a long shot.
'Classic' insurance is often no cheaper than normal insurance... in many cases I've found it to be more expensive. Though you get what you pay for I guess...
However I wouldn't even consider '23' to be young in insurance terms and I should think it would only make a tiny difference to your premium.
What would Macgyver do..?

Thanks.

You've reassured me it's going to be possible.
There is no way we would (or could afford increased premiums) let him drive the familly Chrysler or the Land Rover so that leaves the Minor.
I enjoy driving it so am hoping he will feel the same and it introduces him to the fun of older cars rather then modern boring boxes.

My Dad's eurobox insurance went down when he added me on it
Not that I've ever driven it, not sure I'd know what to do with all the extra buttons and switches! Peter Best were 'best' for me when I was under 25, though I would have had to pay a slightly higher excess had I needed to claim.

I'm 23 and insurance is remarkably cheaper for me than it used to be. I shouldn't worry about it too much. Most classic companies don't do under 21.
