Coil - HT leads, plugs (and dont forget to adlust new plugs wider for the extra zap) Air filter - k&N a must as you never have to buy another.
Larger bore exhaust and if your not getting 10-15% more power then somethings very wrong.
A good and thorough service will help too. All and every Fluids, timing, put some decent oil in.
Larger bore exhaust could help too provided its the right one.
Get a copy of the Vizzard bible S/H on fleabay - well worth the read !

Better brakes first or the insurance will jump up.

Read the Bible first - then your limitations are only as far away as the bottoms of your pockets :-)

As with any non standard engine changes you should budget for a rolling road sesh when you're done. It's well worth the money if done right.

First move is to get hold of a 12g940 head from a 1275 engine. Tidy it up - open up the exhaust valve throats - and sink the exhaust valves into the head by 40 thou. Bolt that on (use 1275 gasket) and it's worth 10 bhp. Add HIF38 SU (or maybe HIF44) carb on MG Metro manifold - and with a decent freeflow exhaust that's worth another 10 bhp.
Note the 1098 is NOT a revvy engine - but it can give almost 70 bhp with these mods if the head is reasonably well modified.
However - why not just get a 1275 engine - and modify that ? It's shorter stroke and revs better - and with reasonable mods will give 90/100 bhp without too much trouble.

Well - I looked for a long time (and there are even les in Ecosseland), and then like the buses two came along together! They are out there. But the modified 1098 makes for a car that can easily keep up in traffic - and will serve you well while you look for a 1275 - and the parts will still fit a 1275 although you would need to do something about the sunken ex valves - either fit larger valves or just skim the head to raise the CR.

Yeah the 1098 all prepped up will do for now, at least it will give the car a bit more go.
