Hot ignition key

Post by nicholashall »

After driving 10 mins, not only is the engine warmed up, but the ignition key is practically to hot to touch..! Getting a faint whiff of what I take to be burnt insulation.. The igniion barrel is old & sloppy-feeling, so I'm thinking this needs replacing. Can anyone confirm that this is the problem or suggest anything else?

Sounds like definitely a short circuit somewhere - you need to find out where before you drive it again - that could see the whole thing ablaze.

Could either be a short as suggested, or simply the ignition switch itself is arcing and heating up.

What have you got connected to the ignition switched circuits, other than standard?
