Dodgy front suspension

Post by jackfromsa »

Hey there. I have a 1962 minor 4 door, with telescoic shocks allround, which I am doing up with an A15 engine. However my suspension is giving me some squeeking issues. I think its a problem with the bushes and rubbers however I replaced them some time ago.

This is only one of my problems. When I am going down the freeway, my steering wheel starts to shudder howeverthis is more violent than a wheel being out of balance, could it be that my steering rack has gotten worn so that there is play in the coupling? when it is stopped I have a small ammout of play in the wheel, similar to the shudder I get from it when I am driving.

Any advice would be heaven sent!!!

Chcek your tires do not have any bulges in the tread or side walls. Also, check the wheels are not buckled.

Bushes - probably definitely bushes.
is it worse when you brake? if so then definitely probably bushes.
If not could be trunnions?

Have wheel balance checked in any case, if they are ok suspect worn track rod ends, there should be virtually zero play in rack and pinion steering. Check rack security to bodywork, and lower pinch bolt on the column. Also check the Tie rods and bushes, and make sure the Tie Bar fork in the wishbone isn't worn oval. If it is drill oversize and fit new High Tensile Steel oversized bolts through the tie bar and fork.

Could also be worn trunnions. Tele dampers prevent a badly worn trunnion pulling off the kingpin as they act like a brace link. Remove dampers and check suspension for wear by rocking the wheel with the car on axle stands. Do NOT drive the car without the dampers fitted.

If you rebuild the suspension, I would reccommend using Poly Bushes.

What's an A15 engine ? Has it already been fitted to the car - and if so - is it heavier than the original engine ?
