Post by dalebrignall »

hi everyone i changed the oil last week, and when i do i always buy a filter and can of oil ready for next time.i use duckhams 20/50,and find it very good.the oil my motor factors gave me was plannet 20/50 never heard of it before. it seemed too cheap only £6.there are no speck numbers on the can.shall i use it or put it in the lawn mower.i think thats all its fit for.

oil

Post by Willie »

If there are no spec numbers at all on the can I would use it on the Mower. No numbers means they cannot guarantee that it reaches any
of the normal criteria. Oil is the life blood of the engine and it is foolish
to use a suspect type.

ASDA/Morrison 20W 50 if fine - i've used it for years in many different cars - no problems at all. Just don't expect it to last for ever. £6 sounds expensive!

Oil is the life blood of the engine
Exactly! I would suggest that you use a good quality, well known brand - Duckhams 20w/50 is one of them. Change it and the filter at least once per year and if the engine is in good condition to begin with, then there should be few problems with wear.

'Modern' engines do 100k+ miles as a 'norm', and 'modern' oil design is one of the major reasons why.

Hi Dale I have come across that enconomy oil before, Duckhams seems to be available at shows but difficult elsewhere another good oil often overlooked is Comma oils that is usually available from motor factors etc or if you have a local Partco they normally have unipart oils.

I was once told that the cheaper oil is actually filtered and recycled used engine oil, that's why it has the bluish vaugley opaque tinge to it.

I tend to use the cheap stuff for my yearly flush - run it for a week with the cheap stuff in, change the filter and put a fresh batch of the cheap stuff in, run for another week, then change to the decent oil.

Plus it now carries API Spec into the bargain. It stays very clean in my engine, even after 3,000 miles very little discolouration.

Surprised the other day in factors to see a classic 30w oil on the shelf - only about £12 for 5l. bit thick for up here thoug so will stick to cheapy brand and change it often.

thats right apparently and they also add the various detergents and chemicals that have been depleted from the original oil.
Nice and environment friendly as long as your not running a performance engine more than adequate.

They do a bit more than 'filter' the recycled oil - it is also high vacuum treated to remove all traces of fuel and water - and additives are well, added! Comma/ASDA/Morrisons - all of that type - and all excellent for a Minor. I see Makro now have a 'classic' 60 oil at a fair price.

I use the cheap asda stuff.
It does worry me that there's not any ratings at all on it but money talks in this household and at £4 a tub it talks loudly!
Perhaps one day when I stop all the leaks and rebuild the engine so its smoother than a baldies bonce I might invest in posh oil. Until then she'll soldier on with what she gets!
What would Macgyver do..?

Dunketh - I've used the ASDA stuff for years and years - in a high power Mini too - and never had any problems. It's fine.
