Wiper blades

Anyone solved the problem of getting decent modern wiper blades?

I just buy a pack from Halfords and cut them down.

I guess you should buy ones that are exactly twice as long as Minor ones so you can use all of the bits. :lol:

My problem is getting them to contact the glass properly. If I tighten the springs in the wiper arms the extra friction stops the motor altogether.
Maybe its just on its last legs? :-?
What would Macgyver do..?

That's where I got the last lot from and they aren't very good, which is what prompted the question....

ok i got mine from bull motiff i think they are made by a componey called tex they are still a little too big though they seem to work well.there are some that come from chima they are not so clever hope this helps.

I give the wipers an easy time by using the rain repellant coating in a yellow bottle. It's sooooo good I've even driven at 70mph in the rain with no wipers :o . - it just beads off. It's especially useful for side windows and mirrors.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

i use that on my saab i might put some on the mog it does work well especially on a filthy wet night

Ive tried cutting down modern blades on a modern car before now with terrible results - due to the metal strip in the rubber blade.
Migth have another attempt for some for scabby as they are on the knackered and needs replacing list too :D
Just have to find a type suitable for chopping and maybe try cutting them to lenght with a 4" disc cutter?

Rainex is well worth the effort - if your wipers failed on a Mway or such you wouldnt need them - the water just beads off after a certain speed.
Before going to the trouble of appling properly (ie as per bottle instructions and requiring plenty elbow grease) its worth getting a bottle of halfords glass cutter solution - gets your screen back to new & removes all grease before applying the rainex.

Oh whilst think of it - rainex also do a 'Anti Fog' treatment for the inside of the car too - and that stuff really works as well - ideal for mog windscreen heaters and trav rear windows.

Now if only they could come up with an anti dog snot and slobber treatment :-)

Hi Nimrod a point that is often overlooked with the wiper arms is that with time they can twist slightly so they are not flat to the screen, just remove the blades and make sure they are if not you will have to twist them slightly back to the correct position, as mentioned by dunketh the arm springs will affect things if they are too weak if as in his case the bit of extra pressure cause the motor to slow right up it sounds like the original grease in the motor has become too thick with age it can even become almost solid and the way to overcome this is to strip the motor of all grease and replace with a fresh lot and aslo turn the mechanism 180% so that it then runs on the unworn part of the pinion, if you do this though mark the cover so that the self park position is retained.

I thought I'd add to the 'I tried modern style blades and they didn't work' - with the good batches of classic wiper blades (from specialists) they worked really well, but even using the modern but little-dinky ones for 2CVs I found that I couldn't get decent screen contact.

The classic ones were, though, made by Tex.

So how do you fit them into the arms?
Ahhh I just buy the rubbers. They come with the plastic back pieces.

Cut to size, slide rubber into plastic, slide plastic into metal tabs on wiper arms. Job done.
Some times you have to widen/narrow the metal tabs but thats about it.
What would Macgyver do..?

Anyone remeber the replacment rubbers that used to be advertised? if i said maybe back pages of a sunday newspaper e.g. multibladed they were, claimed to be used in rallies & such in the ads but no doubt that was to be taken with a pinch of salt.
The things actually looked quite good - in an end elevation view you had the standard blade but two more either side each being shorter then shorter again.
Bit of a gillette solution to water displacement from the screen.
Googled couldnt find them but would give them a go.

I put a set of those on my splitscreen Landy. They worked better than the standard wipers (not that that's saying much). Haven't seen them in the shops for years though.

There's a Trader goes to some of the Classic Shows in Scotland - sells absolutely excellent wiper blades - all sizes - for ~ £2 each. Unfortunately I can't remember the make - but I buy new blades for all my cars from him every year - and they work.
