i cut a piece of rubber off the huge reel i've got to put behind and beneath the battery on all the cars i do.
it's black so looks ok and helps and vibration and stops and draughts getting through also.
i don't glue it down anywhere so u can check behind easily for rot

If you are using a modern sealed battery a couple of pieces of old rubber floor mat does fine, as mentioned above. If you sit a stainless steel tray on top of the mild steel plate, and if they rub and wear through the paint, the mild steel will rot due to electrolytic action.
Another option, is an old PC case which are powder coated. A typical desktop upright PC case is just the right width, so you get three sides with a pre formed lip and just have to cut and bend one side.

battery box
Thanks for the advice guys. My battery doesn't leak by the way. I just thought it would look really cool, to have a smart looking box to completely contain the battery, so that you only see the pos and neg leads coming out.
Not looking to weld anything in.
Stainless would look really good if it was well made.
