Traveller question

Post by jeffrerw »

I've seen that a few people have a nice piece of wood covering the space where the spare wheel sits.
I don't have this though on the Traveller that I have just bought! Is this because mine is missing or are they DIY jobs?
Thanks
Rob

I think that this is a personal DIY thing ? On my one it has a piece of hardboard lined with formica type stuff. I presume that this was standard, but I'am not sure.

It is meant to be there, as there are two fillets fitted as standard to slide the panel into. Easy to make from some 3 ply which was factory standard.

They were originally a bit of black cardboard crimped into a metal U channel, but these disintegrate over time. I too have a piece of ply cut to shape in there.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Thanks for your replies!
It seems to me that where the door bolt goes in to the car would get in the way of any piece of wood though.
Do people have a piece cut out to avoid this or is there a little trick to be done?

The door closing bolts do indeed tend to rub on the insert panel, but not a problem if you stick to 3 ply that's not too thick.

Mine's a bit of varnished 3 ply, as Moggy tech says. The locking bolt just pushes the board out the way.

I've also made up a foam holder for the jack and wheel brace, that fits into the space to the left of the spare, and the foam springs the board against the door bolt and stops a lot of rattles in that area.

A quick search on ESM shows they have something that looks as if it has a framed top edge for £18.50 +VAT. Look for "Spare wheel aperture board" under Traveller parts.
Cheers, Axolotl.

I know that you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I am not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant.
