Manners

Post by bigginger »

Just lately, things have been getting a little rude and thoughtless toward other board members - the sellers of vehicles and others with opinions that aren't always agreed with etc. Could people bear in mind that what is written here can be just as offensive (if not more so) than what is said face to face?
Sorry to be prissy, but folk ARE upset.

It seems a bit below the belt when a newbie comes on here for the first time looking to sell their pride and joy, and the first thing that happens is ten or so regulars point out all its faults and joke about how much they've overvalued it.

If they've only come here to sell their car and nowt seen of them before or since, is it any wonder?? There were only here to sell the car, not contribute to the club or Morris Minors.

Besides, I don't think offense was meant, merely pointing out common sense facts, unless a healthy dose of reality is offensive to some. I had a chap e-mail (via the East kent website) me who had a Minor for sale, no MOT and he was asking £700. I replied in a matter of fact way, but the simple truth is, many folk either try it on or simply don;t know the true values, or are wildly optimistic.

If its a matter of "offense", surely its better to risk offending a stranger than get ripped off anf offend your bank balance.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Manners cost nothing is true, its also true that some people just aren't aware of that fact.
Forums in general always attract a small minority of Keyboard warriors no matter what the subject. All things considered this is one of the best Ive seen for good behavior and to a point self moderation due to the vast majority being sensible and helpful.
Perhaps you mods need to be a little more heavy handed from time to time. Warning, suspension, ban if people dont behave.

Some people are unaware that much of what they say face to face is interpreted and assisted by their tone/manner/body language.
Smileys aside it's virtually impossible to include these in what you write so readers can easily get the wrong end of the stick.

On a 'manners' related point does anyone else find it annoying/embarassing that they can't let passengers into their car first?
I always used to open the door for the wife in my old cars - with the minor theres no lock on that side so I can't!

Taking this into consideration and the fact my exhaust regularly 'farts' at other road users perhaps Minors were actually designed to promote bad manners?

manners
it cost nothing to be courtious to people treat people how you would want to be treated.
empathy
i cannot agree more that something somewhere over the years has lets say slipped, i was brought up to give up my seat to a lady on a bus, open doors to let them go first, and ensure they walked on the inside of the pavement away from the gutter and not lets forget respect for the elderly.
now off platform

regards to all on this great site

Some of us give them a hard time if/when a post is deleted or such, I hate to think of the respose if the above happened.

I have a sneaking feeling this has come about as a result of a thread I was involved in. If I have ever caused offense to anyone on this board I must apologise as its not been intentional.

It wasn't, relax. If you're thinking of the one I'm thinking of, I backed you up then and still do now, but other things have been happening behind the scenes in moderating world...

Is this a good enough reason to make the site[msg board forum] for members only ???

I'd have thought that this message board could be seen as an important resource for all minor owners or potential owners as well as paid up members. Does it matter if some only come onto the forum to sell, isn't this how most of you purchase your cars.
Sometimes folk on here are treated rudely, sometimes the normal banter reserved for established members can be misplaced when replying to newbies, even some pretty inoffensive remarks can be taken out of context, just because of the unknown tone in which they were written. Smilies are useful ways to enhance comments and make sure that the original meaning is known.

I agree with you totally Jonathon. It can also depend how you read the message. Messages can easily be misconstrued if read in different ways. I think the smileys are a brilliant way to add feeling to the board. :D
