It's doing this since sorting the fuel pump points.
but i also mistakenly messed with the mixture and adjusted the points.
Going to attack the mixture later and the timing but wondered what causes this before i go making it worse
Could be both - weak mixture and retarded ignition timing can both cause this. Basically - pinking is too much ignition advance - wind it back till there is just a wee tinkle as you plant your foot - and then tidy up the mixture to get best idle.
No - best do timing first, then mix unless it's really miles off ? It's dead easy - hot idle - lift the carb piston with the little pin - if it speeds up too rich, if it slows down too weak, and if nothing much happens it's just right!
have the mixture done - wondered what Ray was on about with the little pin but found it (dead handy) 12 flats out is pretty much on the money as it happened @ approx 1000rpm.
What i did notice which might have been the cause of it all .... exhaust blowing at the manifold joint so must have had some effect.
I persuaded it to move at the weekend whilst doing the bushes that side- it wasnt fitted too well and whacked the chassis on starting.
gave it a bit of a lever and obviously broke the seal.
Anyway the 12 out is good so its actually running smoothly again, but i am convinced the dizzy needs a twist.
Could do with a new one really, although its quite new (5k miles) noticed its poorly made, one of the poles is quite badly askew. Can not be helping anything
You can't just go with '12 flats out' -that's only a starting point - check with the lift pin. If still pinking - then retard the timing slightly using the thumbscrew micron adjuster on the side. It's marked A dvance and R etard.
well i did the pin thing @ 12 out - gave hardly any change at all to the idle @1000rpm so must be in the right place more by luck than judgement
As for teh dizzy - when the cam holds the points at max open its only 'JUST' catching the rotation of the rotor arm, arm was blackened last 2mm of the contact edge only so think theres room for improvement there.
Ah but the spark occurs just as the points crack open. But just clean up the rotor arm and the cap contacts - although new ones every couple of years are a good investment.
Sorted ! the problem ..... messing around with it occurred there was too big a gap on the inlet from teh dashpot cyl. sure enough whipped the pot off and put some tesion back in the spring - closed the 6mm + gap to nil. Throttle off response is fantastic.
that was remaining up hence letting fuel in on the cycle even though the ignition was off and the mix was assume ignite by residual heat.
Shuts faster than a Scotsmans wallet now so hopefully thats the end of that
Also sorted the distribby, was way out, a far better idle and tickover now. All stuff worth doing.
Bet anything this will help the fuel economy too
Well done - so the dashpot was stuck 'up' ? I'm surprised you can find enough roads to drive on where you are to make fuel consumption measurable !
I like the 'Scotsman wallet' comment - not heard it before of course being very generous and giving by nature.
Well wish i'd noticed it before, gave it a clean whilst pondering the fuel pump points - it was always slack going back but never noticed it not closing properly.
Hey ive been measuring mpg since got the thing, guess its an indicator of if or not things are all well.Always assumed would get 40 but have thus far been only getting 32 without lead footing it. Will fill it up tomorrow and see in a week what its doing now.
I did a fair bit of driving around Glasgow this weekend. It wasn't as bad as some cities I've been in, but the signage left quite a bit to be desired (I don't have sat-nav).

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Glasgow traffic system can be extremely annoying WRT the one way system. Often you can see where you want to be, but have to drive 5 miles to get there
As for Livingston, it's all bloomin' roundabouts, heavy on the tyres.
London takes the biscuit though. The rule for Taxi drivers seems to be traffic lights change colour, but that's all.

Yes, I had that one. OK, I just go right here, on a couple of hundred yards, left, a bit further, and I'm there. Ah: "no right turn." Plus when I first arrived I missed the turning for the hotel and had to drive several miles to get back to it.

Well just been to the local shop and back, all ok until the return journey - a half mile or so hill.
Seemed it starved because going up the hill was firing for a second, then not, consistently till got to the top.
Also seemed very under powered even though running smoothly so guessing the mixture is much too weak? That or the fuel guage is out and there isnt actually a 1/4 tank in there.
