Rockers - just a set of feelers, a spanner, a screwdriver and a manual to give the right order of doing them. It says to set them to .012, but one person will be along to say to set the exhausts to .015 - your choice :) Points gap - same sort of thing, just follow the manual. As for plugs - I've never been able to change it satisfactorily, but somebody else will help

I agree with Andrew: all rockers set to 12 thou. It is possible to set 4 rockers at once, but not easy to remember which. A simpler way is, if you can do simple maths, remember the number 9:
With valve 1 fully open, adjust valve 8
With valve 2 fully open, adjust valve 7
With valve 3 fully open, adjust valve 6
With valve 4 fully open, adjust valve 5
With valve 5 fully open, adjust valve 4
With valve 6 fully open, adjust valve 3
With valve 7 fully open, adjust valve 2
With valve 8 fully open, adjust valve 1
Set points gap to 15 thou.
Plug gap 25 thou.
Remember to run the engine up to temperature and then re-torque the head - the manual gives the correct sequence (which hopefully you have already followed!). Then let it all cool down and reset the rockers when cold.

thanks for that order a manual online the other day. don't think they know what a moggy is in halfords!!

Done the head up okay havent torqued it down yet its just sitting on hand tight just now. Cars been laid up for 27 years no welding needing done been for mot foot pedal is shocking, trunions seized just brakes needed. Pipes, flexis, cylinders, shoes, drums and master cylinder. the drums are beyond scimming etc there shocking.Body works great no painting been done or required. Carpet is like a string vest and although the seats have no breaks in them or fading the springs and little pading is not there

all the brakes can be done including drums quite cheaply from one of the many minor specialists out there.
just done my head and simply retorque after the first start up to temperature, and reset tappets, then after about 10 or 12 cold to hot cycles do the same again and you should have no problems. :D

There is an excellent reason for setting the exhaust valves to 15 thou gap - but don't bother if you don't mind them burning out!

Indeed - but it can happen. Rover opened up the tappet gaps on later A series engines for this very reason. It makes sense to apply their thinking to earlier versions.

In twenty-seven years and over 500K miles (including much on motorway and trunk roads) in Minors I've always used 12 thou on all valves and never had one burn out. However, I can't see 15 thou causing any problems, so it's a matter of personal choice and no wrong answer.

I wonder if that is a a record for Minor motoring ? Certainly sounds like it would be a contender - well done!

Everything else is easy stuff. It usually the other way around!

Though interiors are mega money for 'new' stuff so start saving. :(
