Smiths gauge refurb
Can anyone advise on how to change the bezel on an electrical Smiths temp gauge please? The original is scratched and the glass needs cleaning inside too. Thanks, John

The bezel is a crimp fit over the guage body. You need to use a very sharp screwdriver and prise the original bezel away from the body, enough to slip it over the lip. To refit the bezel, I use a flat punch. Rest the guage on thick cloth to protect the new glass and bezel front, then peen over the bezel. Gently does it all the way.

I took a Smiths oil pressure gauge apart and it has a series of notches in the body flange such that if you turn the bezel to the right position it comes off without needing to bend the tabs.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.
Indeed. Though I find I still have to prise the tabs up slightly to be able to turn the bezel to the notches - I tend to use a very small screwdriver with a blade about the same size as the depth of the tabs so there's less chance of slipping and gouging something (usually my fingers...).alex_holden wrote:I took a Smiths oil pressure gauge apart and it has a series of notches in the body flange such that if you turn the bezel to the right position it comes off without needing to bend the tabs.
