wiper motor problem

Post by malminor »

putting back together my daughters 71 minor I have come across a problem with the parking of the arms when switching off the wipers, they park at the top rather than at the bottom, I tried the obvious moving the arms, this meant wiping the bonnet instead, all I have done was to remove the motor to refurb the engine bay, I took the top off and disconnected the arm, which I put back together as I found it, or at least I think so, it's been a while, the other thing I have done is negative earth and an alternator, am I missing something daft.]

i would try removing the wipers again, and turn the wiper motor on for about 20 seconds, then let it stop and attach the wipers in the parked position. If this doesnt work, then try loosening the bolts on the top of the wiper motor gearbox, and turning the round metal part which has a wire attached, as this adjusts the parking position of the wipers. first method should work if the wiper motor as not been disturbed though...

If you disconnected the arm in the gearbox and now the wipers are parking at the opposite end of the cycle it would suggest that you put the arm back on 180 degrees from where you took it off.

It sounds like the round gearwheel cover (it has the lead soldered onto it) has been replaced in the wrong position. loosen the nuts on the top of the motor and rotate the cover until the correct sweep has been restored. If you are not bothered about concourse appearance you can carefully notch the cover to assist in rotating it. When it's in the right position you can mark the other cover section in the same place to help you should this happen again. It's a fiddle to do so but you MUST check the open bonnet doesn't catch the wiper arms as they sweep.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

If wiping the bonnet - you must have put the arms on in the wrong position. Take the arms off - and observe the cation - and check if it is stopping at the end of the sweep - ideally 'just' after the end of sweep. then fit the arms so when it starts - it takes the arms across the screen , and NOT the bonnet! If it's not parking at end of sweep - then adjust the cover as PT describes - until it does!

Had a good look at a Triumph 2000 at the week-end and although the wiper motor looks similar it's a different mounting. May be possible to simply transfer the T2000 motor (with 2 speed gubbins) onto the Minor gearbox - or make a mounting adapter plate. Later Minis are indeed 2 speed - but cylindrical type motor again with very different mounting - and the sweep arc will likely be wrong for Minor. But - all is possible given enough time/effort.
