There was some talk awhile back about extending the age at which classic cars might be exepmt from road traffic licence costs. Did that ever happen does any know? Thanks, John

There's an article on this in last months Practical classics, they had a petition to try and move the tax exempt barrier to the rolling 25 year system but the government have said they are sticking to the 1973 cut off date.

It was one of the Conservatives policies, if they got back into poweer, to reintroduce the rolling 25 year tax exemption to come in line with the rest of Europe.
This is a "double edged sword" as some European countries have limitations of use for historic vehicles which could restrict daily to and from work type travel among others.

it's a nightmare trying to get a car swapped to historic from plg
and an even bigger nightmare if you haven't got a new V5
i put in an application over a month ago and have now been told it's not on the system anywhere and that i might be able to keep my number but it will be non-transferable which isn't a prob but i want it MOT'd soon
what do i do in case they don't let me have the number!!!!!!!!!!!
computers hey a real pain lol

This must depend on your local office. A friend took his land rover up there and got it changed in no time at all. Literally filled out some forms and bobs your uncle. Done.it's a nightmare trying to get a car swapped to historic from plg

So I guess thats a big pat on the back for the Poole office of DVLA.

Rolling 25 years would be great. I'd start looking out for minty XR4is and Capris - sadly its not going to happen.

What would Macgyver do..?

Of course it won't happen - think of the tax revenue they'd lose if thousands of younger cars suddenly became tax exempt!
What concerns me more is that, among all the talk of road pricing, no mention yet has been made of exempting classic cars from this particularly nasty piece of legislation (if it ever comes to pass - I will refuse to vote for any beggar that proposes to introduce this ludicrous form of taxation)!
