Windows and doors

I spent a bit of today taking my front doors to bits, what a bloody fiddle that was! Anyway i finally succeeded in getting everything out/off! So first of all, how do i refurbish the windows, more specifically the clamp on the bottom edge for the winding mechanism as all the rubber is persished. And secondly i have a rather rusty bottom ( no pun intended) on 2 of my 4 doors, are repair panels available?

Re the door repair panels, yes all the major places (ESM/Bull Motif etc) do bottom door panels to replace the rusty bits. You will need a joggler if you don't already have one, as you need to put a lip into the good metal on the old panel, so you can weld the repair section in flush.

They also do complete door skins, but boy they are not cheep. Last time I checked I think the door repair sections were about £20 a door, maybe a wee bit less.

Does anyone know about the window glass clamps, the rubbers are all perished and scabby on mine!

If the usual suppliers cannot supply window clamp rubber- as these guys http://www.classiccar-trim.com they may be able to supply something that you can cut to size to hold the glass in the channel.

Whats the best way to get the old ones off? Ive tried to lever them off with a flat bit screw driver but i dont want to get carried away using that method!

Do you mean window channel rubbers? If so, they are readily available from ESM, Bull Motif etc. And cheap too. I recently replaced all of mine and the car immediately lost all of its rattles!

To get the old ones out I just worked the end out with a screwdriver, and then gripped them with a pair of pliers and out they came. No problem. Dead cheap, dead easy and a great result!

Nope, i mean the metal clamp at the bottom of the window glass which the winder mechanism then engages with. The metal clamp sandwhiches a piece of rubber in it, and on mine this is all perished and mankey....ill take a picture!

Try East Kent trim (or another automotive trim supplier) they might be able to send you the right thickness/type of sheet of rubber and you can cut your own to hold the glass back in the channel. Its just a bit of rubber wedged in there -I think from memory-

If the metal clamp wont come off why are you wanting to change it?

These are a complete sod to re-fit. I replaced one on an old mk2 fiesta and every time the window got stuck in its channel - off it popped.

If I were you I'd leave it well alone. Doesn't matter what it looks like. If its stuck good and fast to the glass just be greatful. You can still clean the glass around it.
