Rear Hub removal

Post by youngun »

I removed the rear hub nuts today, what a fight that was......ended up with 3 foot of pipe on the end of my socket!
Anyway, ive consulted my manual and it shows the hub being withdrawn with some special puller, can i just adapt a standard 3 legged puller and use that to withdraw the hub?

I put the wheel back on with a piece of thick plate covering the hole in the centre and gradually tighten the wheel nuts. After the hub comes unstuck, hold onto the outside of the wheel and pull while waggling it side to side.

To drift the hub back on without knocking the bearing out, temporarily refit the halfshaft and hit the centre with a soft mallet.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

I got (both) mine off with no problems with my cheapo car boot sale slide hammer.
Took about 20 seconds.

Never had any bother getting these off - they are (in my humble experience) just a nice snug slide fit on the axle shaft. But bolting the wheel back on and wiggling should get it moving!

I found the rear hubs on "Dibble" were quite a struggle to remove! Nut was very tight, but thanks to Harry Mango's large Whitworth spanner then came undone. I used a hub puller to get the hubs off. They were tight!

I found the Nuts to be extremely tight as well!

The rear hubs are just a nice snug fit, or at least mine were. I removed the nut and gently levered the hub off using a tyre lever whilst utilising a piece of wood on the brake shoe fulcrum point on the backplate (piece of wood protects from any damage you might do). The hub came off really easily for me. I removed the front hubs in very much the same way. Much cheaper than buyer a proper puller!

Ive just got mine off, bloody hell.....so much for a snug fit! I used a 3 legged puller in the end with a T-Bar to tighten it up. I had to really tighten the puller up before they finally popped off!

Much the same experience on my project too! It seems not all rear hubs "just pull off".

Oh you're just not using the right technique (he says with tongue in cheek).

A Scotsman's idea of "Gently wiggling" is probably very different to mine and yours John!!
