Flasher warning light - alternatives?[FIXED]

Guys -
on our 1960 2-door, the warning light assembly on the flasher arm is broken. The lamp holder is squashed, and beyond repair. Sad, but true.

Questions:
a) Can the warning light assy be dismantled from the flasher selector arm and the lamp holder and green lens be replaced?

b) I was thinking up some nifty LED replacement - I imagine the warning light is fed with just one wire, holding 12V at intervals. A big bright LED and a limiting resistor would be a good replacement. It could even be fitted into the speedo assembly

...
Anyone tried this? Where did you mount the LED? What resistor value did you use?

c) anyone with a spare flasher arm /warning light assy just laying around? PM me, I´ll take it off your hands

just had a look at the old one i replaced with new last week - i ran it over but the stalk is fine.
trouble is just looking and where the stalk pivots on the cast that clamps the steering column it held in place with crimped metal so no way of removing it from that column clamp.
The green lens is in one piece - not sure whats inside and theres a little electrical tape around it so maybe the thread is worn? nothing a little instant gasket wouldnt hold in place though.
There is just the one wire going up the stalk.

Managed to buy a new old stock one for £55 which was worth every penny - no wonder the old one didnt self cancel there were none of the bits left for that.
Its quite a clever thing and as i said well worth £55 and thats from someone who hates spending money

I took some friends out for a drive in Fenchurch the other night and they seemed inordinately impressed by the little green indicator light. ;)

"There is just the one wire going up the stalk. " - What colour is it, Orkney? An old schematic I have says light green? I want to intercept this wire to make a LED solution if need be. 35 UKP and NOS is way out for me.

The one in the stalk is mostly black with thin white stripe - it is connected to the solid green wire

Tnx. Can this black/white wire be seen somewhere outside/south of the assy, in order to intercept it before the stalk?

and sorry forgot - it comes out of the stalk and is joined to the green which then goes to the bullet connectors - just concerned if where it joins is on metal so maybe its an earth/live for something else?

Hello Bluesman,

I fitted a combination dip\indicator and horn stalk (Ex Triumph I think) and to replace the indicator warning light I fitted small green LED's from
RS Components (rswww.com) and just picked up a supply from the green\red and green white cables. Mounted the LEDS (with built in lenses) either side and low down of the speedo. (no resistor by the way.)

Some ideas for you.
I fitted a combination dip\indicator and horn stalk, using the stalk horn contact for a washer switch. The dip switch is still on the floor. The trickiest thing was the housing.
The direction warning lights are in the speedo. I used the two orange ones, as shown in the photo, replacing the bulb with a high intensity white led, also as shown. ( be careful when removing the glass bit of the bulb) The resistor would probably be 560 ohm but this is dependant on the needs of the LED. This, http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz , is the easy way to work it out.

If you are going to just replace the green light on the stalk, remember that LEDs are very directional and most of the light would be aimed at the side window.
Having done all this, I must say that I miss the green light. It was part of the cars character. There was something about being intermittantly lit up by a green light at night.

That's not a good idea unless you bought ones with a built-in resistor designed for direct 12V supply - LEDs tend to melt or explode without any current limiting.
