When fitting new brake drums .....

Post by Orkney »

Be sure to degrease the inside braking surface :o

Putting on all new ones yesterday got to pondering if to paint now or later which meant i ended up studying them.
Brand new they are covered in what seems to be a drying grease for corrosion protection during storage.
Then the penny dropped and sure enough the insides have the same coating.
Cleaned them with petrol and emery cloth and the stuff did take a bit of shifting.
Thought it worth mentioning as wonder how many people might have put new drums on end never cleaned the insides.
Sure wouldn't do the shoes any good at all being covered with that gunk!

Ah yes but i realised before it was too late - before the car was off the jacks in fact - so never ruined a set of new shoes & got to appreciate the illusive amazing brakes :-)
I probably might have admitted it though if for no other reasons than to spread a smile and save others a few bob :-)

yes, that rule applies to most things - even the inside of trunnions regardless of whether they came assembled on a kingpin from the supplier, or the inside of brake cylinders

When I was at college, a mate was building a 1400 mini engine - with the pistons in place he couldn't get it to turn over... he hadn't taken the protective coat off the bores as he didn't know it was there :?

yes they were fine when all was replaced bar the drums - I mean really fine - going to stick a vid clip on utube of an emergency stop - because i actually think people are too quick to ignoe whats not working and assume the brakes are rubbish by default and then start leaping to 'i need to upgrade to discs' (at which point no doubt Wolsely 9" drums get mentioned :P )
When really when they are working correctly they are actually great!
Surviving population of Orkney will be pleased to hear that!
They are just pleased the mad range rover will never get through another MOT
