Left hand drive conversion

Post by m.hunter »

Hello all, another daft question ! :-? I wonder if anyone can help, I`ve finished the RHD to LHD conversion ( we live in Germany and don`t want to have any problems OVERTAKING German cars! ) without any real problems at all.

Everything is fine apart from....... the door can now only be opened from the - now, passenger side. This, is very annoying !

Where can I get a 4 door passenger side outer door handle or, how do I change it over? My wife refuses to drive it untill it has been done properly :o
Many thanks for any advice :)

I'm not sure that they were ever made, but somebody is bound to know better :D A famous oversight by the makers, given that a large part of the output was for export... :-?

Yes BG - but in those days of political incorrectness they'd have been saying 'serves em right for driving on teh wrong side of the road' :-)

Take it then that the door mechanisms are handed - and are they model specific?

You could try E-Bay.com instead of .co.uk you might get a left had side driver door. If a door isn’t on the e-bay.com, you could ask a seller the question. :P

I wasn't joking, I'm not sure that the left door ever had a lock, whatever side of the road the car was to be driven on.

Did the LCV LH doors ever have an external lock?

As far as I'm aware the cars built after 1964 had a passenger side external lock, so they did make them.

On our 1960 2-door, the left door is the non-lock version too. This car was a regular LHD export car from the factory, sold by a Swedish dealer/representative.

Strange and irritating, but yet another engineering/production economy "feature" to refer to as "charming", I guess.
