A friend of mine has 2003 renault clio 1.2 16v with a few problems. When accelerating there is a rythmic grinding noise that speeds up as you get faster, only happens in 2nd and 3rd gear. I reckon this needs the gearbox removing and checking over? it is slowly getting worse over time as well....
also the radio does not appear to be aware of whether the ignition is on or off, I imagine this is a loose connector at the back? Battery is flat ifthe car is not used for about 2-3 weeks...
Any ideas would be appreciated. I did try and sign up to a clio forum but I never got sent my password!

do you have any idea how long this gearbox will last? he is not a very fast driver so it doesnt get pushed hard.

I checked the dipstick, there was plenty of oil, Its fwd so I assume gearbox shares oil with engine like the fwd A series???

No it doesn't! We have a 1999 Espace and the gearbox is a totally seperate unit and as far as i know all renaults of that age are the same sort of set up as i was looking at replacing the gearbox in ours and was trying to source one from a different model that was compatible. 1990's Clio's have a seperate box for sure!

and on Fiats too! Yes on modern FWD cars the gearbox (and hence the oil) are totally seperate to the engine, you will need a plug key- sometimes square, sometimes a filler plug (on the gearbox casing about 1/2 way up) undo and fill with oil till it drips out- tool will be metric, oil needed EP80- neither to be found in the average Moggy toolbox.
The gearbox is found low down in the engine bay usually on the n/s of the engine bay.
How on earth can a 2003 car have already developed a gearbox fault?
FWD gearboxes these days are treated like sealed units. You shouldn't have to top it up ever - other than when you pull a shaft and a little dribbles out the hole.
French cars these days- especially a certain brand- seem to be going through a dodgy phase with reliabillity and quality. The nearest car dealer to me is a R£^@"(t, so lots of my neighbours have them and they can be quite troublesome cars even from new and to cap it all the dealership is not very good on customer service either!
I would say a 38+ year old Minor, if properly serviced, can be much more reliable and definitely easier to fix if anything does go wrong.
well the owner of said clio has now gone to university and it is driven by his sister, I will mention it to her but I reckon the car will not be looked at and driven until it stops.... at which point they will ask me whats wrong with it...
some people are just not into cars!!
