more engine identification

Post by rob1954 »

Hello,
We're new to Morris ownership. My wife bought this '54 last week. I was told it has a 1000cc engine but I'm not so sure. It's painted gold so I assume it's a replacement engine. The engine number doesn't seem to tally up with anything I can find on the net.

Any ideas??

A gold seal 1098 - or could be a 948. What is the engine number? That would probably tell all :D If not, look for an aluminium plate low down on the LHS of the engine, which'll say either '1100' of '950'.

Woah! That was quick.

The engine no is RM 14867.

This number is on an aluminium plate by the thermostat and on the document. I've not found any other aluminium plate.

Hmm - you're right, V odd engine number :D It looks like a 1098, as I said, but they look very like the 948s, and it has an air filter I've not seen before. Somebody'll be along in a minute to have a stab at the engine number, I'm sure

So it could well be a 1098. Originally it would've been an 803 (Is that right??)
Thanks Andrew

I *think* it would have been a side valve engine, but when it comes to saloons, not LCVs, I'm afraid I'm pretty much guessing :D

Is there a number cast into the engine block on the exhaust side at the front near the sump?

This message board is like a family - you can't choose the other members!! But remember engine oil is thicker than water.

engine number

Post by Willie »

The only reference to that engine number which i can find is that RM indicates a Riley engine with 'manumatic' transmission whatever that means. Your pics show the early type carb. and the very early heater pipe layout of a Minor though. As mentioned, look for the plate just behind the nearside engine mount on the crankcase beneath the exhaust manifold.

Thanks for your responses. Apart from the RM number plate, I can't seem to find any other plates. I can only find numbers cast into the block.

Here's some pics.

This shows the LHS of the block nearest the gearbox

This is a closer view of the same

It also has MOWOC(?) cast into the LHS.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

If you remove the tappet cover and find the cylinder head casting reads 12G202 then that would indicate the head from a 1098. obviously this does not eliminate the posiibility of it being mated to a 948 block but it's unlikely.

Also My 948 engine had a tap on the lower rear of the block (manifold side). i have never seen this on a 1098 but perhaps others can comment on the validity of this.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

I know that very few 1098s have the removable cover (for a mech fuel pump) as shown in the bottom, but some do...
