Rear Disc Brakes

Post by e-minor »

Hi All I was having a tidy up the other day and i found a cutting from a old classics mag from may 1991

morris mania ltd

somewhat abbrev

brakes

kit stage 1 uses marina wheels (exch hubs) £45
kit stage 2 uses mog wheel -use fiat/ford studs £85
full kit £250
look front disc kit vented dics £425

Look rear disc brake kit "new" for the minor axle also ford one offs welcome £180

While i accept that rear disc conversion is probably complete overkill...the idea interests me ....anybody any ideas...other than saying dont do it??

cheers

a lot less expensive and more reliable to use a japanese disc brake rear end in my opinon. If you have the means of fabrication of course.

rear Discs

Post by e-minor »

What i was trying to find out was how it was done with a std mog axle

i understand that the h/s are a weak point and as a result the car should not be fast enough to warrant anything doing to the rear brakes ..

still the idea interest me ...was it sierra brakes and fiesta calipers ?

I suppose anything is possible - more likely to have been done on the Spridget version of the axle.

Totally pointless but an interesting engineering excersize nonetheless.

The fiesta/escort boys tend to use granada rear cali's on a custom backplate with Fiesta single-width discs. (Granada calipers have a mechanical handbrake attachment - essential as hydraulic handbrakes are not legal for road use)

They cut down the drum so much it basically becomes a 'hub' on which to fit the discs. Then its just a matter of positioning your backets.
What would Macgyver do..?

It would be pretty cool to see a standard minor rear axle with disc brakes but i just dont see what the point would be other than the pleasure of doing it.

I'd be very interested to know if you pull this off. I'm hoping to do some track days / hill climbs, and the more brakes the better! A morris with 4 discs must stop on a six pence.

rear discs

Post by e-minor »

Hi I have been pointed off forum by pm from a friendly guy to frontline costello who do a spridget disc conversion..

the point of the topic was to see if anybody had done this themselves with basic bolt/weld on engineering rather like the conversion for the mk2 escort axle.where all the parts can be acquired fitted to a mog spare axle then this bolted on.

somebody out there surely has done this..

many thanks
