Engine Identification

Post by adritch »

Slight repeat of a post I have under general discussion, except now I'm not sure my ebay purchased alledged 1098 is in fact a 1098.

Engine number is 10V/189E/L92866.

Can any of you learned folks shed any light on what size engine I have?

Thanks,
Adam.

The 1098 should have a plate reading 1100 low down on the front left of the engine ;)

You have a late (after March 1969) 1098cc engine, LOW compression, with a dynamo originally fitted.

Ok found the following site;

http://home.zonnet.nl/carclub.ij-v5/MG_ ... necode.pdf

which is quite useful info wise, though still not sure I fully understand all the numbers, but:

10V indicates - Morris 1000 van closed circuit breather (what's the end bit of that mean then?)

Don't know about the 189E

L - think this is low compression (booooooo)

Don't know what 92866 means (expect this is just the engine number).

Anyone corroborate by view, or tell me the bits I don't know?

Thanks,
Adam.

It all fits ok, you have the low compression engine which is usual for the van, the 10V 189 E is the proper prefix for post March 1969 engines and
yes, the number is just the engine number. The L denotes low compression. Closed circuit breathing means that the crankcase fumes
should be fed into the CARB (not the air filter) via a rubber pipe.

Thanks Willie,

What's the difference in power/torque between the high and low compression engines?

The difference between the High and Low 1098cc engines is purely in the amount of dish in the pistons. The dizzy advance curve is also different.
the compressions are: 8.5-1 and 7.5-1. Bhp of the high comp. is 48 @
5100revs. Maximum torque is 60 ft lbs at 2500 revs. I have no other info on the low compression engines.
