Hi Yes, you could fit a switch on the 12v supply to the coil from the fusebox. I did this a few days ago to my friend;s Triumph Vitesse. I hid the switch behind the dashboard. It was easy to do and took about 10 mins.

a switch in the one of the wires to the coil or fuel pump is a very easy and also very cheap solution, but can still be overcome by someone with a bit of know-how.

If you really want to keep an eye on it then a tracking device is another solution, this allows the car to be stolen but it can be tracked by the police, and they can find the car.

Hidden fuel pump switch is by far the best bet. Thief gets the car started - and 100 yds down the road it splutters to a halt. The car is now out of position and attracting attention - thief runs away. It saved my car 40 years ago!! Came out the house - no car!! Ahh - there it is - sitting just down the road. If you switch the coil - the thief may just take the very simple way to bypass your switch - simple wire with croc clips from the battery to coil does it. Of course - do both!! The switches cost almost nothing.

Simpler and slightly less obvious than cutting into the supply to the coil is to run a wire from the spare terminal on the distributor side of the coil via a hidden switch to earth.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Aye - that is a bit more difficult for them to diagnose/bypass - but if they leave it with power on the coil it will get a roasting and may even catch fire if left long enough!

I was in maplins the other day and they had key switches in stock, some were double pole. they were about £3 each. I suppose this type of switch would give extra security as long as the terminals at the rear were hidden so the switch couldn't be bypassed.

Simplest way is to take the rotor arm with you when you leave the car! Can't be started unless the thief has a rotor arm.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Take the rotor arm with you. Or fit a hidden switch that shorts the coil CB terminal to earth.

I have a switch on the fuel pump on my saloon, which I regulaurly forget, until the car starts to stall, and on the van I have the battery that won't start the engine with the starter, I have to use the handle. I don't think many thieves would know that you can still start a minor with a (seamingly) dead battery........

Will change it when I get a 1275 in it!

See the post above that explains why CB shorted to ground may NOT be a good idea.
I do like the flat battery idea!!

Has anyone got/know of a step-by-step guide for fitting a fuel pump switch for someone who has virtually no experience with electrics? Thx.
