i have a morris that was driven by a friend for about 15-20 mins with no oil in engine or gearbox. it does still go but my guess is that it will die soon
ive been told that all the white metal will have come off and it is the equivalent driving 100,000 miles.
and i would like to see some other peoples opinions and to hear any experiences people may have had like this.

15 to 20 minutes?? eek. I would guess that it seized or did they make it back home? I'd also expect the engine to be complete scrap.
The gearbox may have survived, but with a few of its 9 lives removed.
If you run the engine with oil in it and it works and has reasonable oil pressure (I doubt it) then just keep running it until something bad happens - you've not got too much too loose.
If damage has been done, then as suggested, a decent second hand engine may be the most economical solution, however many other options exist including a DIY rebuild (all parts are readily available but not cheap and you'll probably need a crank regrind and cylinder rebore) or to buy a recon/new engine (many recon/new engine options exist)
In this case I'd be fairly reluctant to do a DIY rebuild as there could be damage to so many additional engine parts that it's not worth the effort. (crank and bearings, little end bearings, pistons, bores, oil pump, distributor drive bearing, cam and cam bearings, cam followers, rockers and rocker shaft, valves and guides etc...)
