wheels, and polybushes

Post by jothina »

are the wheels on a 63 minor tubeless or do i need to fit new tubes when i change my tyres, they have tubes in at the moment but as the tyres are quite a few years old this may have been due to punctures, also , i've just perchaced a front polybush set from esm, do i need to use any grease when fitting these?

They would have been tubed from the factory, but the trouble is that modern tyres aren't designed for tubes - rough inside. A lot of people run tubeless, which I imagine is fine if the wheels are in very good nick - last set I got, I asked for tubes though, and they were fitted without, and have never been sompletely air tight - I can't use those wheels until I get that sorted. As for poly bushes, what you're after is 'white grease' - Hfords sell it in an aerosol, as I'm sure other places do too.

My 61 handbook says the tyre are tubeless. I think they stopped specifing tubes in the late 50's

I had problems with tubes,

got a flat on a perfectly good tyre because the tube rubbed inside and the valve is not well sealed to the wheel so air leaks out of the tube and out around the valve.

took the tube out, put in a valve and all was well reusing the same tyre.

It will be fine tubeless - but the rims where the bead has to seal must be 'perfectly' clean and rust blemish free, and of course the seating where the valve sits must also be perfect. Only other possible leak then is at the rivets - in the wheel well - but if these are loose/leaking air the wheel should be thrown away anyway!
