MM uprights

Post by sii803 »

I read a topic recently but cant find it. It was detailing what was involved to convert a MM to later uprights but retaining the original hub and hence PCD.

If anyone can find the topic I would much appreciate it.

I am considering it as my outer wheel bearing outer race has worn loose in the hub. I am hopping I can fit a larger wheel bearing into the hub.

Thanks,
Matt

I guess this is the answer you are looking for:

"I also modify the stubaxel on the swivel pin to take the early hubs / bearings and drums, so I can keep my early wheels - this has also worked fine for years now. "

PM me if you want more datails

Thanks Svantemann

Do some people do the opposite by machining the hub/drum to take the later out bearing?

I'm not sure if this will fix my problem anymore, as looks like somone may have done what i suggested by machining the hub and have overdone it. Hence my bearing is loose in the hub/drum.

Is it difficult to get new drums?

DO NOT machine the hub/drum to take the later bearing !!!!
If you do this there is so little material left in the hub/drum so when you brake hard the heat from the brakes will make the bearing loose - I have seen this. The best way is to modify the stubaxel on the swivel pin to the early bearings.

I have no idea if it possible to get new early drums.
