Scotland: Eglinton this weekend

Post by badfelafel »

Anyone going?

I was planning to pending an MOT.

Good news on the MOT - replaced a brake cylinder at the back and the steering gaiter, and thats it.

Bad news is non MOT (but should have been)
The front brakes are binding when the car warms up...

So if its repaired by Sunday, I'll be there!

PS Tried to PM BMC but keep getting some error debug message!

Barry - it was miserably wet and very poorly attended - I left after an hour! Hopeless show anyway - virtually NO autojumble. Your caliper pistons just need freeing off! This has to be done all the time with Minis etc that are not in everyday use - and your car was standing for a while. The other STRONG possibility here is that whoever fitted the discs did not bother to modify the master cylinder (it's a bu$%£& of a job) to stop the slight pressure retention that is built into the design for use with the drum brakes. This WILL slightly drag the brakes after they have been used once, yet they will be free when first going to the car after it has been standing. So check it out - are they free to turn when the car has been standing for a while ?

PMs still not working!

Shame about Eglinton

Car is in a garage, better get it out, as everytime they look at something its another £100!

They replaced the hose to the brake already (taking an hour plus the part)

BMC so does your diagnosis fit:
is fine just after the car has been sitting
it only begins to hold after the car has been running for a bit (30+mins)

Sounds like it to me! Can't remember if you have a servo - but don't think so. Otherwise i would blame the servo. If they are free when it's been standing then there is nothing wrong with calipers/brake pipes/flexi pipes etc - I remember we were able to push/pull it out the garage without any difficulty. So - it's almost certainly the modification to the master cylinder that has been 'overlooked' by whoever fitted the discs. Big Ginger keeps saying it's easy to do - so ask him!!

Circlips pliers, pull out internals (few years since I did one), remove the top hat rubber, replace. I"ve never said 'easy', just that it's NOT monumentally hard to do.

Ah - THAT PART isn't difficult - but the getting to the master cylinder - that's the difficult job!

Which discs are you running, Marina/Ford/other. Who's kit is it, if Ford either alloy or steel hubs, Marina either modded hubs or re engineered stub axle.

Jonathon - Barry says the discs are free when the car has been standing - but after use they are dragging - which the MOT lad is failing. It's almost certainly the master cylinder holding the pressure up and dragging the discs. I know it's running standard Minor wheels - I didn't pay much attention to the disc type or the hubs.

just a note about the ayrshire classic show at Eglinton.

it was a poor day but only weather wise yes it was non stop rain .
but the organizers still have to put the effort in to make the show happen and over 200 cars did turn up on the day (remarkable given the weather)
you can not DISS a show just because the weather was bad .
and no show now a days has much in the way of auto jumble it all goes on e-bay .

i had 10 cars booked on the club stand and 9 turned up we had the party gazebo up and stayed dry but we did get very wet taking it down ......
the show was wound up early as the rain hadn't let up all day and very little public had come out but still had a over 30 class winners in the ring .

our clubstand winner a blue convertible did not win .

but the morris minors club stand took best of show and we got a very nice trophy .

you had better bring the minor next time and be on the winning team ..
lol .

It was good to talk to you Mark! Yes - I accept the organisers have to put in a great deal of effort - and are just as down-hearted as the exhibitors when the weather is terrible. However - many other Scottish shows manage to attract a good number of autojumblers (Moffat/Biggar/Scone/Selkirk) - and to my mind they are a major attraction to the show - and should get to put their stand up FREE! Only genuine autojumble mind - not toffee/dolls/old plates/jewellery and all that stuff !! Well done on the prizes - hope to meet up with you again in less miserable weather circumstances - and have a good look at your excellent Van and Pick-up.
