but.... *still thinking* modern nasty cars have mirrors right on the front of the door, don't they - not on the wings,? our jazz does - and it's not hard looking in its mirrors.

Yeah I always found that, too!
but on a van you will need them sticking out a fair way to get past the rear cab
yeah.... i guess... although it's not as hard to get that sorted as I had imagined, looking at the vans at the National this year
Having them on the doors might make more sense but then again not many things make sense on a minor!
I think they just look better and more original on the end of the wings

I have wing mirrors fitted to my car and I have to say I find them useless in terms of function, ie seeing behind me. I only put them there really for originality sake really. When I do eventually get the Traveller on the road, I intend to mount mirrors on the doors.

in a van a pssenger rear veiw mirror is a good option as well, i have a stick on one on the front windscreen works well
andrew is right, they were all ways a dealer option
i can remember looking at a new morris minor van, and it did not have any external mirrors
I have wing mounted mirrors on mine but the problem is that the 'clap-hands' wipers get in the way and you can't see the passenger side mirror at all, I don't know if this is a problem with the other wipers though

I have the same problem. Although with my wing mounted mirrors, the drivers side is fine, but I tend to find that the passenger wing mirror is too low so that I have to raise myself up to see into it as well as the wiper arm being in the way.

I've always found that the wing mirrors look nicer, but in terms of practicality have a rating of about nil on the passenger side, and two on the driver's! However, I do find that a rear-view mirror fulfills my needs where the wing mirrors fail woefully, and they really are mostly for show! Then again I have a saloon not a van, so that makes a rear-view mirror considerably easier to use, I would guess.
