Rear inner wing conundrum

Post by youngun »

Having got a repair panel for the rear inner wing, i have found that the lip on the body side is totally rusted away, indeed i just cut the piece that sticks out from the body straight off there was no way of saving it! leaving about an inch and half of metal that drops straight down , i have been cutting out and welding in new bits to strengthen it. The question is, do i weld in a new piece to make a lip which i can then but the repair panel to, or not bother and just use the repair panel (which has a lip on it)?
cheers,
YG

I'm not sure which lip you mean? Which part of the rear inner wing? Is it the lip that the outer wing fits onto?? Which repair panel- pics would be good.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

And if anyone thinks im going to leave the spring hanger blocked up like that, then they are quite mistaken.....I just dont have the correct holesaw at the moment!

Anyway, as you can see the repair panel i have is the rear quarter one, the top of which has a lip which the outer wing sits on, normally this lip is formed by and lip from the body and a lip from the inner wing, but i had to cut most of it off as it was rusted. So, can i use the lip on the repair section and not weld another lip onto the body side of things?

Hi Youngun,
I see what you are doing now! I've not replaced the entire rear inner wing section on a saloon, only on a traveller and repaired sections that I made up myself on the saloon.

If the repair section has the missing flange, i would use that, then butt/ corner weld it to the car, seam seal, paint and waxoyl to preserve the repair. Dont leave any gaps or holes or overlaps where water could get in and start rust.

You don't really want two flanges/ lips welded together under the wings- would create another rust trap, IMHO. I think the flange is only there to help locate the rear wings, I would tack the repair section in place then check the fit of the rear wing before seam welding it alltogether.

Looks like you are doing a really high quality repair, btw! :-) Keep up the good work!
