Front wheel bearing for 1954 two door

Hello all,

a couple of questions....

While rebuilding the front end of my sII, I found that the left side hub and wheel bearings came off the car very easily. When I tried to shift the right side, I had to break out all sorts of pry bars and large implements. I finally popped the hub off, but the inner bearing was stuck on the spindle.
I was able to remove the inner bearing with a puller, and thought that it was a bit too tight! When I re-installed the hub with the bearing installed, I had to use a hammer and a piece of wood to drive the hub assembly back on!

Should the inner bearing be that hard to remove/install?
Could I have the wrong bearing installed by the previous owner?

When I tried to get a new set of bearings in the USA for the front, I found that mostly the post 1956 model bearing were readily available, but i had a hard time finding pre 1956.

I have found a supplier via an ebay sale and wondered if anyone had any experience with this supplier?

Louis Galea, Hayling Industrial LTD can supply the parts for the 1954 per email conversations with him.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

they supply all types of bearings to industry. great prices. and will sell individualy. look on the web "bsl uk". if you cant get them from them {no reason for that} i can, as i have an account with them. top quility bearings supplied, for industry. have a nice day. they sell oil seals to.

1954 bearings should be the same as post 1956. It was only the early Series II cars that used the MM (sidevalve) type front hubs/bearing. If your car has wheel studs, then it should use post 1956 (1000) bearings. If it has wheel bolts, then it will use the earlier bearings.
Bearings should not need to be hammered on the stub axle. Has the stub axle got a rough surface (corrosion, centre punch marks)?. Ideally the bearing should slide on with slight resistance. Removal can be tighter than fitment but it can depend on how long the bearing's been fitted.

scott i think there is a slightly different size bearing on some split screens, they have the same hub but the stub axel is different, if i remember correctly.

It does have the hubs with the bolts rather than studs.

The spindle was nice and shiny, no rust and very smooth.

I suspect that I must have the newer or just wrong bearings on the one side.

Brixtonmorris, thanks for the web link. But I think that site is beyond my technical abilities. I was hoping for a kit designed specifically for the 1954 early type hub. It looked like I had to take measurements of my old bearings and then locate the proper bearings on that web site. I just don't trust my skill level to do that.

I take it that no one has worked with the supplier that I mentioned in my earlier post. I was asking mainly because as an Ebay member, the seller had a Zero feedback.
