Hi all, my funds allow me to buy some parts to refurbish the diff ad axle, what usually goes? I know I need the axle gasket as it's leaking a bit and the breather but what about the bearings? I don't know in what state they are as the van was never driveable in my possesion Thanks

The differential bearing are very robust and do not often give problems.
The pinion oil seal often leaks but is available and is easy to fit, just undo the pinion nut and replace the seal, do the nut back up to 140 lbs
ft. the hub bearings are easy to change if necessary and have to be removed if you wish to change the hub oil seals. The left hand side of the car,from the drivers seat, undo CLOCKWISE. Fit the correct thick gaskets when refitting the half shafts and new rubber rings if your vehicle has those. Make sure the breather is clean and clear.

so you think both bearings wouldn't need replacing as I noticed there's an inner and an outer one? maybe I should finish the vehicle and check them when the car is driveable?

There is ,unfortunately no way of checking a diff for noise until you drive it on the road. I have bought reconned diff units before which look perfect but sing like a bird when doing over 30mph. Most of the hum on a diff is caused by the meshing of the pinion with the diff which is a highly skilled job to set up properly. By two bearings you must be referring to the pinion shaft as that is the only section with two bearings?

I agree with your plan to 'wait and see' - just fix any obvious leaks for now.
