Nasty scratch

Post by coogee »

Hi hope every one had a good day. Today I was opening my garage doors and it had scratched a 4inch long line along the roof of my car it’s around 1mm wide. The scratch has gone to bare-metal at parts.
Could any one advise me what to do?

Thanks in advance.

Ouch!!, thats a shame! :( . Soften the edges of the scratch with 1500 grit paper, only so the edges , best to run two parallel lines of masking tape just outside of the scratch. De grease the area carefully.Try and get hold of a small quantity of almond green paint. Go for 2K in this instance with a small amount of hardener mixed in. Only mix a small quantity(thimble )size of paint and apply with a good artists brush, in dabs along the full length of the scratch. Build up in layers allowing time for the paint to dry between coats, apply enough layers so that the 'dabbed' in area is standing proud of the original paint, make sure you cover the full scratch. Leave for at least a week then flat back with 1500 and 2000 grit wet and dry paper, use loads of clean soapy water and a flat rubber rubbing block. Flat until the scratch disappears, keep flatting confined to 5mm each side of the scratch, then cut back with cutting compound and a final hand wax. Good luck

Thanks for the help.

Will I need to use some sort of primer on to the metal to stop any rust forming.

You could apply some in the same manner, but if the steel is rust free when starting to 'tip' in then there is really no great need to do so.

You can get the proper cellulose touch up paints from ESM. In handy touch up pots with a brush. Quite cheap per small bottle, can get primer too http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/ind ... 7668a1499b

I would use these if your car originally had cellulose paint (most Minors did). Cellulose is the safest and easiest for the home restorer to use.
