Five and a half J Steelies

Post by webbnuts »

Hi,

I am trying to source a set of 5 1/2 J steel wheels for my Minor. I am however pretty new to the Morris scene, and am not sure if i should be looking for 5.5J, 5 1/2 J etc. Any pointers?

Thanks in advance,

Sam.

The closest you might get is 5J rims - some of these were made in the last 10 years in a small production run using a Minor wheel centre and a modern rim. No idea if they are still available new or not, but if you phone around the suppliers in Minor Matters you'll find out one way or another.
The next closest is the 4.5" wide 8CWT van rim - these are fairly well sort after so a normal price is £25 per rim upwards in tatty conditions, and of course more if they have useable tyres. You can occasionally find odd ones a bit cheaper but it can take years to make a set that way.

To get 5.5J there are a couple of choices:
1) Ford/Peugeot style hubs (e.g. with front disks and a Ford rear axle). Ford gives much more choice in wheel availability.
2) Marina hubs - then you get the option of Montego/Maestro 14" wheels - see Matt's post in useful tips. Ther are also 13" wheels available for thoise hubs (e.g. Marina wheels)
3) Have some alloys (Minilites?) made to your spec (Minor PCD and whatever width you fancy)

I know you'll disagree Ray, but I'd say they'll cost a bit more than that. Good stripped and primed go for about £50 each - at least, I've bought them AND sold them for that :D

Minor Developments do the 5J as mention Minor centr and I think transit outers...............they do look nice I think £60 a rim, contact John Vine he will advise you and yes I agree with bigginger £50 for a good 4.5J (LP917) blasted and in primer for that mind you

happy hunting!!!

Sold a set this year with tyres for £30 each... and a set 2 years ago same price. Have previously offered £40 in response to a wanted ad on here (also a few years ago) and was told that was too expensive. One of you 2 above may remember that ;-)

Have paid up to £40 a wheel if they've got tyres but try to pay a lot less than that. My latest set came free on a Series II Traveller.

As for the £50 a rim - maybe if they were free of dents and any pitting and you wanted them for a concours car but otherwse I'd think £50 is way over the odds (IMHO)
happy hunting!!!
Indeed!
One of our msg boarders managed to get hold of a few at £15 each at the national... I don't think he paused to think about it too long before saying 'erm, yes ok then'

I think the £15ones at the National were not LP917s........................in fact I am pretty sur ethey were not.

My advise also buy with tyres off the rims...............that way you can SEE the rim.

bigginger is right again £50 but must be Good blasted and in primer

I was led to believe that John Vine (Minor Developments) has ceased producing these wider wheels, £50 for a good refurbed wheels is ballpark, and the way to go for the original look. The cheapest option for wheel and tyre package is to buy new minilights which can be cheaper to buy than the steels plus tyres, and are simply off the shelf. Just ask in the right places

Could try this place
www.wide-wheels.co.uk/index

They make banded steels, but the welding is certificated, and therefore they are road legal.
