auto

Post by steve4063 »

i'm still toying with the idea of fitting an auto box to my 1275 ital engine

does anyone know which gearboxes fit i've looked through back threads but no-one seems to know

the only thing i've found is that one chap said if you've got the marina/ital engine it doesn't pull right with an auto box. better go ford.

but i don't want to as i already have an engine :) why waste money.

failing that i have an mg recon 4 speed gearbox that was attached to it.
so i have also toyed with fitting an overdrive unit.
has anyone done or heard of this either.

which unit/box do i need and how difficult is it.

thanks :D

The auto boxes should be easy enough to find (I've got one or two spare as they're used on small Triumphs), but sourcing the bits to bolt the engine to the box will be nigh on impossible.

You can fit the A series to the Triumph/ Marina box, and therefore should be able to fit the Spit/ Dolomite 1500 overdrive box. It's not straightforward, but people have done it so the parts must be available.

I strongly suspect you won't be able to fit an overdrive to the Minor type ribbed Midget box, at least not with huge amounts of machining of everything and lots of money/ time etc.

As to a 1275 auto being able to drag a Minor - Plenty of 1275 automatic Metros were sold and they seem to manage just fine, so I don't see why a Minor would struggle!

There were 1275 auto marinas - so you just need all the bits from one of them !

And the last time you saw one of those in any condition, let alone rotten but unmolested in a breakers..?

I searched high and low a few years ago when I wanted to A series my Triumph, came up with absolutely nothing. Annoyingly there had been an auto 1275 Ital in a local breakers, but after sitting there for well over 10 years they weighed it in to make room for yet more useless black box sea of plastic modern rubbish :(

It took me a LONG time to track down an auto bellhousing, flexiplate and torque converter.
The engine back plate is basically the same as a manual so that isn't a problem neither is the gearbox (BW65 not the earlier BW35) which is fitted to numerous other vehicles.
I placed loads of wanted adverts in magazines as well as on-line including the Marina / Ital owners club - without success even though I'd have paid serious money and bought a complete car if necessary.
If I was in the position again I'd simply use a 1300 Ford Kent engine and autobox. Cheaper to buy, far easier to source and probably no worse to fit as the 1275 with BW65 isn't a simply bolt in conversion - it needs quite a bit of conversions for a Minor.
