Temp gauge flickering.
I have fitted an electrical water temp gauge and wired it to the stabaliser on the back of the speedo (where the fuel gauge gets its live feed). However, I think I may have done something wrong because the gauge works perfectly when I turn on the ignition but only until the fuel gauge reaches its correct reading and then it flicks around.

try this thread its a very common fault. usually the regulater is overloaded.
only 59p and 1/2 an hours work and you'll have a very powerful regulater u can add extra stuff to in future
rob jennings is the man for extra advice on this one very knowledgeable and helpful

I have followed Rob Jennings instructions on fitting a voltage regulator but the temp guage does not work at all unless I disconect the earth from the center pin, then the guage reads max no matter which way I connect power and sender. Can anyone help?
With just the ignition switch turned on 11.57v on output from regulator, with engine running 13.47v

err thats no good at all, is your car negative earth? the regulator output should always be 10v unless the input falls below about 10.7.
is the regulator wired correctly? if you have got the outer pins the wrong way round you have probably killed it?
given the reading you give you have simply the battery voltage
and do you have the centre pin / tab of the regulator earthed (-ve) properly? it may be necessary to run a wire from bodywork to ensure this

Hi, Yes vehicle Negative earth with Alternator fitted, 12.3v on Input to regulator with just ignition turned on, 13.96v on Input with engine running, so regulator is "working".
Really good earth for center pin but as I said guage reads Max unless this is taken off the earth.
Regulator a Maplin special.

input side is fine and if tab/centre pin is well earthed that should be ok.
did you get pin 1 and 3 the right way round? that about the only mistake to be made, and may be fatal for the thing so would mean replacing it with correct connections, steve fitted one as well as my own one so should work fine.

I am sure Ive got the pin 1 and 3 the right way round, however the regulator from Maplins is a diferent shape to your diagram, mine is a flat face on one side and half round on the other with no means of securing it to the bodywork, it has no markings for pin config, what I might do is try swapping the 1 & 3 wires around and try it, if it blows I have only lost 59p

Problem solved all working now, my thanks to Rob for all his help, my thanks also to Maplins who sold me a misdescribed part and wasted four hours of my time - "Wonder how that happened" was their only reply not even a sorry.

Rob_Jennings,Hi Rob could you confirm what type of regulator is needed for a morris with a neg earth i/e with an alternator fitted is it the n38ca. 1) Also is it possible to fit a amp meter as well and if so where are the connections made 2) How can I check to see if the alternator is charging with a multi meter rather than wait for the battery to go flat, in other words where does one connect the probes to to test.
